I'm thinking of buying a CL420/500 as a reliable everyday car to use over the next few months. It will be used for town driving daily and regular trips to Normandy in France. It needs to accommodate my 4 year old daughter in the rear and plenty of luggage in the boot. I'm not worried about fuel consumption - is this a good idea and what should I look out for?

Great cars and one of the best lookers ever IMO. Go for full MB service history and keep it serviced at a Mercedes dealer. That way you get free breakdown service in the UK and in Europe. (Worth a lot as man and wife cover for UK is about £150 from the AA and cover for regular visits to Europe will set you back another £100 or so. For comparison my A service on an S class cost only £235 and a B service will be about £450.

Comments above assume you are going for a nearly new one (for full details of MobiloLife see sticky thread).

You don't say what age or budget you are planning on. There are great bargains available at the moment brought on by the impending new model and the fairly recent period of very high fuel prices (which you don't mind). This hit big petrol engined cars' residuals.

I have recently purchased a 98 S-reg CL 420 (c140) and from my point of view it represents outstanding value for money having a full MBSH and only 61K miles for less than 9K. I have only done about 300 miles so far but in a mixture of town and A-road motoring it did 19.4mpg.

It is superbly comfortable and relaxing to drive in all conditions (although watch out for size on narrow roads and width restrictions). It is also a very safe car.

As far as buying these is concerned apart from doing the obvious like going for a decent test drive and looking it over yourself you need to get an independent check by a MB specialist - it cost me about 150, but it is well worth it and you should be able to use this to either get stuff fixed or negotiate the price. At the least you know nothing is wrong with it! Also you might consider purchasing a warranty unless you are getting 12 months from the dealer - it can be expensive if things do go wrong.

Good luck.
