Hello Everyone,

I hope you are all well.

Can anyone recommend a garage that is competent with the above conversion? I am based near Aylesbury but happy to travel up to 70 miles if the job can be completed the same day.

Thanks in advance.

Rick

Hi,

Terry at Wayne Gates in Harrow carries a good name on both Forums.

Used him a couple of times and always been pleased.

Give him a call I’m sure he will be able to fit you in.

Cheers

After experiencing many ongoing ABC problems with my CL500 W215 2006 and after considerable investment I have finally decided to install Yellow Speed Racing adjustable coilover struts to my car.

I love this car and want it to live on for many years to come with problem free driving.

There are three aspects to the conversion:

1) Remove the ABC/Power Steering tandem pump with a single Power Steering pump from an E500 of similar year - cost me £120 for a brand new one!
2) Remove all ABC struts and fit the new YSR Coilover Struts - also check and replace as required the upper and lower control arms, thrust arms and ball joint bearings to renew all moving parts.
3) Get rid of ABC warning lights on the dash!

Whilst changing the pump over you might want to remove all hydraulic pipe work, valve blocks etc. to fully complete the conversion and lighten the weight - there may be some residual value available in selling the ABC kit that you remove and this could help towards the labour cost of its full removal?

I must admit it has been difficult to get a Mercedes expert to ally himself to doing a job like this however I have sweet talked AMG Cheshire in Hyde to take the job on and together we will learn the detailed process of this conversion.

I am sure once the mechanical work has been done there will be some finer adjustments to make to get the ride height correct and judge the correct dampening however I remain confident that this will be achieved to suit my kind of genteel driving with power!

Just waiting now for AMG Cheshire to put my car on the ramp!

Any other ailing ABC Mercedes owners out there considering the same?

Thanks for showing interest,

Russell

I just replied to the old thread you resurrected.

ABC gives superior ride & handling than passive suspension. Zero doubt about that. The cost of new/ replacement ABC parts has come down dramatically (due in no small part to the people on this forum). What’s wrong with yours?

I replaced one of the valve blocks last year and had a ABC service. The two rear struts now require replacement and the associated hydraulic pipes. It will also require the tandem pump replacing.

Despite my car being in fine condition to look at, it makes no commercial sense to spend the money to repair the ailing ABC.....next year it will be the two front struts, and then the other valve block etc etc........

I love the car so much and after long deliberation the only solution to allow the car to stay on the road and continue to give me trouble free motoring was to opt for the coilover conversion, it seems I have nothing to lose!

ABC struts are £300 for the 215. Pump is £560. The most expensive line is £300. £1400 beats £3k, no?

Agreed, then there is the insurance increase for a modified vehicle.......
