Hi all.
I'm still watching a few W140's until I'm ready to buy one in the new year. Can anyone tell me how old a car has to be before it qualifies for classic insurance? I have heard that it could be as young as 10 years, but that seems a bit new to me.

Thanks in advance

Depends entirely on your insurer as to what they consider a classic vehicle, you should be able to put almost any vehicle on limited milage agreed value cover though so it shouldn't really matter, Footman James are always competitive and offer good cover, Adrian Flux will cover almost anything but cover is pretty basic even when comprehensive, they paid out ok on my seriously modified Cortina when it caught fire and even continued the policy on and swopped it over onto my next car.

Thanks for the answers. Basically, I need to find the car I would like and phone around to see if I can get a good deal with limited mileage then? I wasn't sure if there would be a certain age for a car to be considered a classic.

Yeah unfortunately there is no "industry standard" as it were, about 5 years ago for example Footman james would consider a mk2 Sierra XR4x4 (Sporty) a special special model and let you have classic insurance on it, but the mk1 sierra 4x4 Ghia (not sporty but which is essentiially the same car) was not, even though its older and rarer, i know this because i tried to swop my insurance from this one

I agree with jib. My 1994 SL500 is fully comp including wife as a named driver and through Admiral costs £240.30. I have it as part of a multicar policy and pay a total of £766.99. Given that the other 2 cars would be around £400 each on individual policies, it is like the SL comes free! ;)

I used to insure the SL with Lancaster (provide photos every year, agreed valuation if written off) but that had moved over £400. I suppose I would only get "market value" if written off on the current arrangements. :-|

I have tried other "multicar" policies, but no one else came close, in fact they all exceeded the collective costs of my 3 individual policies in the past.

Its not all about cost with classic insurance, things like being able to pick your own repairer or get paid to do the work yourself are important, as are the conditions surrounding the agreed value, when my Cortina went up in flames the original offer before they checked i was on agreed value was £250!!!! my agreed value was 3000, they will go on the book value of an average car and if most of em are crappy and worth nothing thats what they'll offer.

you need to make sure if yours is beyond repair that they will pay for one in the same condition, those pics they want sent are for that exact reason.
