C180 - I have a clicking noise similar to placing a piece of card against the spokes of a spinning cycle wheel, It varies in volume and goes away when I turn right. It appears to be coming from the gear box engine area and only appears when driving. The general running of the car is fine.

You probably have one of the heat shields lose over the prop shaft or a parking cable clip has broken, there has been a few theads on this happening.

Look under the car and you will see what ever it is that's just touching the prop sahft or the U J's.

No chance you had a puncture and used a steel spare wheel with the bolts for the alloy wheel??????

C.V. joint,, but not in your car. Could be a wheel bearing failing!

Thank you Ian. Please excuse my ignorance but are you Belvedere responding, or are you someone saying that you had the same fault and it was a C.V joint? Either way, which C.V joint was it? If it's a wheel bearing do you think it's possible for the sound to appear to eminate from the gearbox area?

Just a thought, it could possibly be the locking pawl in the gearbox (that engages when you put it in P) assuming of course that your's is an auto. I have heard of this happening on an old w126, but only in reverse. The centrifugal force could then be lifting the pawl away when you turn right.
This would at least explain the disticntive click click click you describe, but is nothing more than a guess by me!

Good luck mate

I just quoted the original problem.
I say not the CV as your car rear drive. With the wheel bearing, if its a simple roller taper bearing you may find that a single roller is coming adrift, with the sound going away when that corner is loaded or unloaded in cornering.
Remember metallic noises transmit though the chassis

Jon Pollard - no th eproblem has not gone away - I had my son look underneath but he could not see any broken brackets or loose heat shields. My car is a manual, I will ask my son to investigate the roller taper.
Have you hd any success yet?

My problem turned out to be a broken parking brake clip; car now fixed and nice and quiet again - still cost me £50 in labour mind for a 50p clip. Thanks to all those who assisted with the diagnosis.
