Hi

After being a life long audi fan I've decided to give mercs a try, specifically the CLK. The car I'm interested in is a 2004 2.7 diesel. I had a quick test drive yesterday and although it was a nice car I was slightly disappointed with the low end grunt from a standing start. It was only a brief test drive and I'm going back for another but from my first drive I tried putting my foot down fairly hard and wasn't that impressed with the performance. Is this car normally slow from a standing start? I'd say it was a fair bit slower than my a6 1.9 tdi. Anyone any experience with this particular model give me any feedback?

Many thanks

Jim

The 3.2 diesel has more grunt and came in mid-2005 if my memory is correct.
It may be worth looking at one of these.
There are many happy 2.7 drivers on here so await the feedback.
What's your annual mileage?

I had the 2.7 in my ML at nearly two tons and it shifted that lump very well so i would assume it would be effortless in a CLK.

30 seconds after mine is started in the morning I have to make a quick getaway onto a 40mph dual carriageway in rush hour. I find that I almost have to press the accelerator when a car approaches so that I have the power and go when it passes.
It is further compounded by the fact that I normally do not have the luxury of gently accellerating so I normally put the foot down and then when the power comes it is all at once and the ESP kicks in.

Very un-nerving.

Now the warmer weather is here it is not so bad and when the gearbox has heated up it is OK - but nowhere near as much feel or control as a manual.

Once in motion there is no other way to travel.

I'm sure you already know but if looking at 2004 make sure you miss the dreaded Valeo radiator problem.

Good Luck

Many thanks for the prompt replies! Maybe I'm just not used to an auto and I'll see what it's like after a proper testdrive. My main problem is that I can't find another equivalent model close by to compare it against.

The car is an ex lease car being sold at a local garage. It's an avantgarde that's done 82k and is for sale at £9k. Slightly pulls to the left when driving - garage said they'd sort that if I was buying. Should this be a cause for concern? Apart fom that and a few minor blemishes on the paintwork it looks nice.

I do about 15k miles a year and would consider a petrol if I could find a cheaper one but @ 9k for this diesel I was tempted.

As always...any advice is much appreciated!

Cheers

Jim

The 270 is a bit flat when cold but once warmed up is very grunty. However, the turbo lag is quite pronounced so you have to adapt to it. On the few occasions I have done it, I haven't been beaten off the line but you do have to press the throttle half a second early of you will be sat there. When I first got it, I was scared a few times, diving for a gap on a roundabout and timing the throttle wrong, but once you get used to it, it's easy enough. With a manual you can get the revs and turbo spun up before you go, with an auto you do have to get it moving a bit first.
