Hi folks.

New on here so go easy on me!lol

Anyway here we go.
I have a 2003 CLK 240 coupe that wont start!

I found that the fusebox on the driverside bulkhead area also where theres a silver E.C.U is full of water! At least 2 inch deep!!
When i put the ignition on the main cooling fan runs at full speed, i have full dash lights etc but the engine wont turn over to start.
I have removed the fuse box and dried out with a head gun also the same with the E.C.U.
I opened the E.C.U box up and theres some corossion on the main board and micro chip connectors!
Is this E.C.U controlling the enging starting as well as the engine management side of things???

Hope this makes some sence folks?!

Thanks

I think the box in question contains the front SAM, and it probably damaged, the engine fan and the engine control is also part of this SAM.

If there is any chance of saving it it must removed from the case and heated with a warm air gun, as water stays for ages underneath the IC's

The big worry is how did the water get in, I have one paper showing where a seam was not filled right under that box, I can send that f you wish

I've took the ecu for diagnostics and repair if poss will find out in the morning what the state of it is.
I think the lid of the box may not have been fitted correctly by someone at some point and rain water has run in right off the windscreen.
I've drilled a drain hole in the box to prevent this in future.

Thanks so much for the tips folks it's great to know there's the knowladge backup on here cheers

Found a local place that repair E.C.U,starters alternators guy seemed to know his stuff.
Says if he cant fix it then there's no charge so can't say fairer than that I spose eh?

If it can be repaired then am thinking that will save me the cost of getting a new one coded to the car again?

ECU repair place called this morning

There are a few pins missing from some mirco chip so the ecu is finished!
Says if i can get a second hand one then he can swap over the security side of things over for £70

If we are talking about the SAM there is no security code, but the SAM is coded to your car for many things fitted, a secondhand one could work for the best part as it is, but depending on the spec of your car some things may require coding

If its the silver ECU this is the engine control unit. Strange that this would get full of water and not the front sam as well though?

Thanks and always hard without a picture or part number, I know that the fan is in the SAM and that was what I went on, this could also be affected, on my SL the shorts were so bad in the passenger SAM it blew the Drivers out on the SL

Not sure if it is a SAM.
It's a Bosch part 0261207781
Or the MB number is A1121532679
Oh and the cars an auto.

CLK 240 E.C.U

The box is located at the drivers side bulkhead directly under the windscreen.
Insides the box there's a fuse box and this silver ecu I would call it.
The box itself was full of I assume rain water if the lid wasn't fitted correctly.
Thus submerging the ecu and fuse box in around 2inch of water.

I might try and upload pics in the morning.

Thanks lads for your advice I do appreciate it!
The Mrs wants me to get rid of the car and this set back is giving her more amo!hahaha
So the quicker I get it fixed I get her off my back! Lol

UPDATE.......

Ok ive managed to source a replacement ECU from a breakers yard.
They have sent me

ECU
Ignition barrel + key
Steering lock.

Fitting the Barrel and ECU is no probs

Can anyone give me some tips on the ignition lock?
I cant see how its held in

Ive done these before on diffrent cars when the lock is at the top at the steering wheel and you just knock out the sheer bolts and replace the lot.
I just cant see what hold this one in.

Thanks again folks.

Martin

Well at last i now have the car running!

New ECU, key and barrel and steering lock fitted.

Total cost £580 from breakers yard.

Beats the cost of £1300+vat from MB for just the ECU.

Now the task of refitting all the dash parst removed for access.

oh the wife will be pleased i get to keep the car for a wee bit longer!lol
