- 2002 CLK 270 CDI (W209)
Hi all,
I have a 2002 C209 gen CLK 270 CDI. I recently discovered that the radiator has been leaking coolant into the automatic transmission fluid, and this seems to have killed the gearbox. It will now rarely engage drive or reverse at all, and you lose drive or reverse as soon as you meet any resistance (i.e. a slight incline). I've not been driving it since discovering the fault, but have needed to move it around the yard a few times, which is how I'm aware of the decline in the health of the 'box.
I have a couple of questions, which I am hoping people who know a lot more than I do might be willing to answer for me...
(1) Is the simplest or cheapest solution likely to be to replace the whole transmission with a good secondhand unit?
(2) If it's a YES to the above, do I need an auto box from exactly the same year and engine of car, or would any Merc 5-speed automatic gearbox work?
Am also wondering about breaking the car for spares, but that seems a shame. Felt luck to find one without any rust, and spent an awful lot of time fixing and servicing so much else only for the gearbox to die. Sad times.
Thanks in advance!
