For my bit make sure that the cars are after 04-04 manufactured as these will have the Nano ceramic paint , but both will be galvanized.

Welcome to the forum Chris :D

Take the 270 CDI for relaxed motoring and better economy. Take the 240 for a more refined low speed drive (no diesel clatter at tick-over)

In my experience the nano paint chips far too easily, no benefit whatsoever.

Just ensure you have full MB service history.

Personally I would take the 270, plenty of grunt good economy (50mpg not uncommon)and good residuals

The 270 is much better overall than the 240. Much faster cheaper to service and very economical.

Hi Chris,

May we assume that the diesel is automatic? If not, I would wait for one that is. If so, the diesel plus auto box is the ideal combination and gets my vote well ahead of the 240 petrol, although costs a tad more - from the prices you mention, there is not much in it really, but as has been said the diesel servicing will be cheaper and 40,000on a diesel is very modest mileage.

Quite a few 270 CDi's on the forum, including mine. The posts above are spot on about the 270. When warm it's a relaxed cruiser with massive torque in the important overtake band.
Fuel economy can approach 50 mpg as said (mine is 45 mpg over it's total life of 28500 miles). Road fund is correspondingly lower than petrol. Noisy and clattery when cold, that's the main downside.

I'm too late to contribute - but I was going to mention that my sister-in-law's CLK240 cabriolet only does 24mpg on average.

As our CLK55 does nearly the same, I'd say the 240 was not great value!

welcome to the 270 club :)
Yes GrayB I once got my 240 down to 13mpg!!
I swapped an E240 for an E270 and reduced my fuel costs by over £30 per week and got a faster car into the bargain. The 240 is a bit underpowered really, which is why it's mpg isn't much better than a 320 - lovely and smoooth though.

Regarding your thanks Chris, you're welcome mate, we were lying to you, they're crap cars.
No seriously, welcome on board. To pre-empt a couple of thoughts you might have about the 270 CDi.
1. In cold weather they accelerate verrrry slowly for the 1st mile or two. That's the engine management system looking after the mechanical bits at unusual operating temps.
2. The auto box is self- learning. It will adjust to your style over several weeks. (At first it seems the changes are in odd places).
Also, I find sport mode is the best for me and I never leave it now.
Hope you enjoy the car.
