I'm having a problem with my CLK with misty/wet windows - on the inside.

My car gets very little use.. may be just Saturday and Sunday. When I get in the car for the first time in day... the windows are fine. I take it out for a drive somewhere and come home.

Then say I want to go back out in it again later that day... this is when I'm finding that the insides of the windows are soaking and it takes ages to demist them (15 minutes or so).

It doesn't happen all the time... just now and again. However it does only happen when I've been out in the car a few hours before. It also only happens when the weather is damp.

I've checked the carpets and door bottoms and they feel dry. When I lock the car all the windows seem to be in the correct position... none of them look like they have dropped.

Any suggestions?

Hi soup,

Check your dust filter or put a new one on. And have the air con on, it takes the moisture out of the air and demists the windows.

Funnily enough I have just got in my wifes car to go to Tescos (because mine was so misted up) and her windows were damp too! Just not as damp as mine.

Interesting comment about the aircon as I normally have it switched off all year round!

My filters should be fine as the car was just serviced in December and it goes without saying that I have the utmost faith in my Mercedes servicing dept ; )

The aircon on will make a huge difference to the mist.

Check if the dust filter was done, it isnt done on every service!

When I get in the car for the first time in day... the windows are fine. I take it out for a drive somewhere and come home. It also only happens when the weather is damp.

If the car is only used occasionally, I think it is wise to run the A/C in any case.

If there is a leak causing the ingress of water, it would be obvious - more so if the car was sitting out in sunshine, without being used - moisture in car heats up, evaporates then hits cold glass and condenses. A common cause of this in cars of the 1950s and 1960s was "perished" rubber seals, usually around the windscreen and rear window, but the leak was obvious on inspection. Replacing the seal cured it. Less likely with today's materials. However, blocked drainage channels could lead to water entering the car (front footwell in the W220 for example).

A commoner problem is warm people getting into a cool car in wet weather. Evaporation from wet clothing, and moisture from breath, when coming into contact with cold glass will condense immediately. So, drive to town on a wet day, OK. Go shopping then get into car, especially several people, condensation.

If there is not an obvious leak, then this could explain it - even if you are bowling along and traffic coming the opposite direction hits a puddle and deluges you with cold water, the inside of your windows can mist over instantly - it can come as a real shock!

Finally, on a positive note, if you can't solve the problem, courting couples might well pay a premium for such a car?

I had a similar problem with my old CLK cabriolet and it was because leaves had blocked the bottom of the windscreen where the water drains away and this had caused water to get into the floor pan of the car under the passenger carpet and this caused awful misting. Check the floor is not damp. I think the water must have got through the ventilation system

Always good to clear the drains in the bottom of the air intake box on ll MB's just a matter of taking off the grill in front of the screen and clearing them
