CLS 320 Glow Plug change

Here is hoping someone can help.

I have spent the morning trying to get a booking to get my glow plugs changed in the car. I had a diagnostics done and it shows:

glow plug cylinder 1 open circuit as faulty.

none of my local independents want to do them, my nearest merc dealer wasn't interested either mainly because they haven't been changed since new and could break was the response i kept getting.

So I am struggling to find someone who will do them, any recommendations? I have seen the banner for Avantgarde over the bridge perhaps take it to them?

Failing that some advice on doing them myself, I am competent around cars and engines but have never done glow plugs.
And all I keep hearing are horror stories about taking them out etc.

there's nothing hard or complicated about changing them yourself but ..... as you have been told, they are easily sheared. Get the engine hot before you start. Soak them in Plusgas, not WD40, days before you start the job to give yourself a fighting chance. I did 4 on my R Class before I sheared one and then took the car to a local independent who organised for someone to drill out the remnants of the plug.

but don't be surprised if it's not the relay at fault. My R Class originally showed No5 as failed, I changed it, the warning still came up .... new relay cured it.

Update your profile with you locality then somebody should be able to point you to one of our recommended independent MB specialists - they are bound to have removed long-time glow plugs before and will charge a reasonable price.

OK I have done that.

I am not really worried about cost, i have rung Avantgarde now and spoken to someone there, I am going to arrange a couple of days off and take it there, then me and wifey will pop into bristol for the day. I got wifey points for suggesting that to her.

Update:

Today took a drive over the bridge to Price Bros Auto Engineers just outside bristol on the reccomendation of Avantgarde.

Having all the glow plus removed and replaced and hopefully pick it up friday.

Going to pop over to Avantgarde then, see if i can get it on the star system and get a print out.

Ah no all is good, we went to ikea and did a little shopping, bought her some lunch as well afterwards, then stopped off in cwmbran and she did some more wifey shopping. So i got triple wifey points

As i had to leave my car there with Prices she followed me down in her car so I had to follow through with the wifey wants points accumilator or she would have left my ass on the kerb!!

Just got back from Prices Auto Engineers and I am really happy with the service i recieved from Chris and Les today.

I went on the recommendation of Avantgarde and also people from this forum, the whole thing from dropping the car off to collecting was perfect.

I did get there early this morning and they were still finishing the car, so myself and wifey went shopping for an hour or so and i got even more wifey points in the bargain too!!

When I returned to pick the car up Les was running the diagnostics over the car to check things over, there were some stored codes in there that needed clearing, camshaft sensor, exhuast back pressure sensor and the c02 sensor on the exhaust, all of which had been replaced recently. once cleared all was good.

Had a good chat with both Chris and Les, very informative and knowledgeable people, I would most certainly take the car back there in the future should i need to.

The glow plugs!!

cylinder 1 was the issue, previous owner had broken it no told me etc. But Les got it out,

One of the other plugs was slightly swollen and one almost didnt want to come out, the other came out fine.

Many thanks to the forum members who recommended them, I would send anyone stright to them should they need the same work done in the future.
