CLS 55 AMG
Good morning and Merry Christmas to you all.

I picked up my new (to me) CLS 55 AMG yesterday and am smitten with it. Appears to well screwed together, no rattles or groans and totally silent apart from the engine. The quality of the interior trim is very good as well. It has had one titled owner and looks as though it has been pampered somewhat. The chap has just traded it in for a brand new CL63 AMG.

I had four people in it yesterday and tons of room and a huge boot. Cosy inside but roomy for head and leg room.

Sadly for the dealer as part of their main dealer used car check they had to replace all the AMG brake discs and pads, along with the back tyres! :)

Couple of initial q's...

1) What is a service E ? That seems to be next and am sure my old CLK430 just has A and B

2) The sales guy did not seem to know the full spec as it was just in the door and not advertised yet when I bought it. He thought it was standard but I have found an elec rear blind, TV funtion, 2 x elec memory seats, comfort/contour seats, bi-xenons, glass sunroof, parktronic, phone installation and still finding things. One thing I am not sure is a column stalk to the right of the steering wheel (opposite side and position to the cruise control stalk) which looks to have a microphone picture on it. Could that be linguatronic and if so, what is it?

Oh and it is Iridium Silver with Nappa Grey Leather and I am going to go and sit in it just now....................big kid!! :)

Congratulations on you new car, it will be too new to check the spec on our ruskie site.

Re the linguartronic turn on the Comand in key 2, lift the stalk towards you and say " Get stuffed" if a voice answers saying "pardon" then you have it.

Congrats on the car, it must be an awesome drive. I am on the look out for one soon (still deciding on whether to go for a 55 or cdi!) and just wanted to ask a few questions.

did the dealer change the discs and pads on your request before your purchase or was it done before you saw it?

Also how is the drive and handling in the wet, is there good traction on the road? I used to have a Honda S2000 and it never felt safe in the wet!

Hello Slick and welcome, the suspension set up on the 55 is basically the same as the 500, with 2 tons of car I have not found the point of no return yet on mine, even on the 500 I can waggle the rear end on a wet road at take off. They drive in an unusual way in that they do not roll or pitch, so taking a bend fast, I do wonder where the take off point is.

Being from an old driving school I hope to never find out

Your mind is in a bad way if you can't decide between a 55 or a CDi as they are two totally different cars:-?

If you want a car that has plenty of torque, low down grunt and is extremely quick off the line or do want a 55?

I think the extra kit on them would include the rear blind, tv function and lingtronic, countour seats and the sat nav are all extras. Lovely car to and a pleasure to listen too

Hi Television and thanks for the reply :)

I agree, I think my mind is in a bad way :D it has taken me over 7 months to decide what car to get, I have been looking at so many different cars, engines, etc, I am almost there now! plus with the state of the current car market it has made my job even harder as many more cars are within budget.

the sensible side to me says get a diesel, but the crazy side says go for the 55....

I feel the same way every time I want to change cars, I've only just realised that it is because I need two cars, not one. Then you can take whatever one fits your mood for the day.

The 55 AMG is fantastic but I would never have considered the 320Cdi, just not a diesel fan. Initially I was looking at the CLS500, which is a fantastic drive but the temptation of an AMG was too much and I dont regret it at all (does like a drink mind you but that should not come as a shock:) )

The 55 replaced a BMW 645 Cabriolet, which was a lovely car but did not feel remotely special - you could have been driving a 318 saloon. However the AMG feels special even sitting at the traffic lights.

Just in the process of booking a ferry trip to take it back to it's spiritual home on Germany.................:D

Oh and to answer your question I had pointed out that the rear tyres looked a little close and they said they would be looked at as part of their pre-delivery check. Both were replaced, along with the discs etc and I had not asked for them to be done. There is paperwork to show they were done though after I placed the order. Was v v v impressed with the main dealer (apart from the p/x price but that is more down to the market in general and they were roughly the same as other dealers)

The 6'er is a difficult car to place these days. I had a 6 conv on loan and loved it. A used 650 or M would be the one for me but hardly any Ms were sold new. Nevermind, you now have a wonderful trio of cars there so well done.
