Hi,
My mercedes cls 320 2006 wth 40k genuine miles has an sbc problem where it alarms bleeping sound and flashes red warning reduced braking power start engine , reduced braking power depress pedal fully and esp defective visit workshop all while the sbc pump is very noisy trying to pressure the system i`m guessing.
I have not used the car in a while and i have owned it from almost new, i read the codes with my reader and have added to this message,
i heard mercedes change the sbc free of charge but surely @ 40k it shouldn't need replaced or reset as it could not have reached brake threshold,
could the auxiliary battery be the fault ? i have tried with a battery charger connected and still the same fault, my reader wont let me bleed the system as it keeps faulting out
there is a few fault codes and any help greatly appreciated.

Get both main battery and auxilliary battery fully charged.
Lots of those codes relate to low voltage.
If either battery is over 4 years old you may need replacements.

You should see up to 12.6v for a fully charged battery. 12v and under, not so good although the car may still start.

Edit:- This is a clue.

Component G1/7(Auxiliary Battery) Is Defective Or Not Installed.

As above,at a guess I'd say it's time to replace the aux battery . If you've owned since 2006 maths says it's 17 years old battery . Apparently the w211 and w219 use the aux battery for the SBC system in emergency, if main battery fails .

Have you replaced either battery in your ownership?

Also it's not miles driven that kills SBC ,it's the amount of times you press the brakes and the pump recharges the systems pressure. For example a cars sbc that's done 40k on the motorways will likely last alot longer than that of a car driven around town.

So these are the brake codes.
SBC - Sensotronic Brake Control
C25D4
Hydraulics Fault : No Or Insufficient Pressure Supply.
Current and stored
SBC - Sensotronic Brake Control
C235A
Service Threshold Reached
Current and stored
SBC - Sensotronic Brake Control
C2514
Hydraulics Fault : A7/3y1(Left Front Separating Valve)
Current and stored

Of these C235A is the clue.
The pump has reached the service threshold. This is the counter for how many times the system has operated. The C2514 code suggests an internal pump valve has failed.
Given you also have C25D4 the pump needs replacing.

As I understand it the pump is only replaced FOC in the US.

You also appear to have a bad auxiliary battery so get that changed too.

the SBC system was a disaster...

early one's chaffed the loom and came with faulty parts, (my father's Feb 2006 build is just past that bit)

then shortly after one of the vey first software updates was to extend a time to death counter - they built in a counter of (I think) 300k brake presses then just turn it off - but german taxi drivers hit that well inside the warranty - so they just extended it

both points got USA upset who brought out increasingly draconian punishment for the deliberate designed to fail actions they kept discovering it was built with... in the end unlimited mileage and 10 year warranty extension on anything to do with the brakes - I believe by 2009 they extended to 20 years, but last time double checked only found the 10 year extension... (either way no one in Europe got that)

The other low volts messages on the car is indication you aren't driving it enough - two week min before a least a 10 mile drive is required to stop the big battery slowly draining (and won't be helping the AC stay filled with gas)

the specific warning about brakes I expect are the two normal issues - SBC its a hybrid of normal brakes and the RR / Citroen idea. Instead of a vacuum brake servo - they get a pump and a nitrogen sphere - once the sphere pops its diaphragm you do a princess grace - and to pretend to keep the sphere pressurised there's a baby back up battery under the cover near the windscreen washer filler - this needs replacing at least every 10 years

I expect two batteries, big one in the boot, and the small one by the washer bottle, a nitrogen sphere and resetting the fake death counter, will sort it all out - as for the detritus in diagnostics delete the lot anything that matters will come straight back

my father's needs the sphere - did the baby battery and the fake death counter 3 years back (autel kit have this reset)

the AC on my father's one held its gas way longer than my S class did... but I pushed 350g of 134a in his this time last year - using the halfords top up bottle - this stuff works light years better than an official empty and re-gas, as their lube includes a seal enhancer (mixed in the gas) - once cars get old, all the o'rings and pump seals are past their best and the correct method of refilling just leaks straight out inside 2 years - the seal enhancer gunk that seems to have no adverse effects will tend to see 3 years serviceable and a forth one limping on still working

Thank you very much for the reply`s, I have checked the larger battery with my tester and it is coming up as good but the aux battery showing replace, i had changed it 4 or 5 years ago but looks like it needs new again, the nitrogen sphere ?, i take it is a changeable part, is that the rubber ball under the motor part, "accumulator", as i thought about replacing the brushes on the motor part too, car has sat a while as what would i get for it prob next to nothing and its mint so i just garage it.
would like to get everything fixed and get it back on the road, the alarm fault was myself disconnected the common fault with the sounder draining the battery

if it has a full MB service history, you should get the SBC fixed under Mobilo life.
this only gets you support - you still pay for any parts ?

so its just RAC cover for one car - as in pointless really ?

johnnySBC member here's website - although website stuck saying 2019 rather than 2023 which would sound more promising... - if the cost of a sphere is that much.... does his refurb include that part ? (replaced from a source where he gets a sensible price) - if so likely a good idea

i'd be pushing very hard on the door for goodwill. it's not like it's gone to the moon and back, mileage-wise. Academic if you don't have the FMBSH I suppose.

Not a chance . It's had 17 years + of breaking . Mileage is irrelevant.

The notorious SBC pump. Yes I have just had my one refurbished and it wasn't cheap. If you know how to take it out, refit and make sure your brakes are working with it properly then the price on the link that @Botus has sent is about right. Unfortunately it was not something that I could do so I had to pay a local specialist to take care of it for me.

I had to do mine on the R230 couple of months back. I did the work myself (I have star gor bleeding it) and it cost £320 plus fluid and a pressure bleeder - call it £400 all in.

I was lucky though. I found a new old stock pump on eBay.

With refurbs ask what they change. It's important to change not just the brushes but also the accumulator and ideally all the internal seals.

There's a German seller with 100% rating offering a pump with 2 years warranty for £480 if that's any help.

There are also polish sellers doing remanufactured pumps @ £799

I ordered one of these (now correct link to the ebay uk site) they said can't confirm its right... and I couldn't get any sense from Bosch either.... but all the places worldwide seem to be selling just this one, ads from multiple sellers both sides of the pond claim its suitable for SBC on the w211 320 CDI tractor of 2006 and the w219 ... so as his is the same car minus 20bhp I bought one....

but merc list the same part on the w211 for the 320 or the 280 - saying the w219 gets a different part number..... I do see on some secondhand ebay junk - they had a removable cover on some ESP pump motor housings - which would help sort the brushes that stick....
