Hello, I am a newbie here, so please forgive me for anyh mistakes.

We have a W124 93' manual 220E, which my parents drive mainly.
Recently a horrible noise has developed, when I start the engine a clunking noise is heard, but when I depress the clutch the noise dissapears?

Could anyone give me an idea of what the problem could be.

Any help would be appreciated.

Go along with merc tech, clutch bearing or Lay shaft bearing, either way the gearbox has to come off.

Thanks very much for the replies, I have been told the car had had it, and the engine has a serious problem.

Is this a major job, and is it worth doing on a 13 year old merc(87000m)which is pretty worthless now?

Its a matter of changing the gearbox, get a secondhand one, I would ask your local garage how much to do it.

It is worth talking to Dronsfield re a replacement GB, they are specialist breakers and should be able to help. If they have one on the shelf they are also able to do the exchange. Providing the car bodywork is in good condition the rest of the car will go on for another 100K.

whooaa!! hold them horses, guys!! he said the noise disappeared when he depressed the clutch - this indicates a worn clutch release bearing, not a broken gearbox.

a 3-in-1 clutch kit will probably do the job. at 87,000 miles the layshaft is unlikely to have worn beyond acceptable tolerances. it's also (possibly) early for a clutch (and release bearing) to have worn so far ... but that depends on how it has been driven.

no way is the car beyond repair; and a not too expensive one at that. changing the clutch you can do yourslef, with a day put aside for the job.

Thanks.

Thanks for all the replys.

I think I will get a second opinion from a local garage.

I thought it would be fairly simple, as it has never been driven hard, living in London you rarely get a chance to open her up, and the stop start of london traffic would have been a factor of early clutch wear.

Thanks again.

I am only asking, when the cutch is not depressed , the clutch release bearing is out of action and everything through to the gearbox is coupled up. the clutch release bearing only comes into action when the clutch is pressed.
