Cold Start Problems C-230

I have been having some cold start problems with a 1997 C-230 and was told by the dealer to change the grade of gasoline I am using. I had been using premium (which is 91 octane in Columbia, MO) and was told to try a lower grade or octane rating. Does anyone know if this is a good idea.

I might be wrong, but I can not see how this could be.

I would rather have a look at the spark plugs in the morning and see if there are any oil on them. I am sure there must be some other problem.

Try the lower grade petrol, but this might cause pinging and you will have to retard the timing.

In S.A. the lowest grade petrol is 93 octane. Everyone always try to use the highest octane fuel and this includes all the merc drivers I know. If 91 was a problem then all of them would surely have the same problem as you have.

Note that I am only guessing at this.

I would get the vehicle's fault codes checked first. Then if you are sure that everything is working ok.

Have the engine cylinders checked with a cylinder leakage tester. Not COMPRESSION TESTER.

Only once you are sure that the electrics & emissions are ok.
