My Vito won't start. It's with a garage in 'sleepy hollow' and they can't find the problem. But think it's fuel.

A while ago it started blowing out blue smoke and I found that the oil level following a service was very slightly too high, I removed some oil. The problem went away. Since then I have kept the oil to the bottem mark on the dipstick

The garage has my van for the bank holiday weekend and is closed, but I had a thought. The van took longer to start since a 600 mile round trip to Wales. I haven't checked the oil level lately......

Does the Vito CDI engine rely on sump oil pressure to get the fuel pressure up? and if say I have run low on engine oil following my long trip, could that be the problem? But surely the oil light would come on before bad starting?

I have read that a fitting in the sump of Isusu Troopers falls off and causes this problem, could lack of oil cause the same? :?:

Hi

It is very unlikly that you have done any damage due to low oil pressure it is good practise to keep the oil three to four mm below the top mark on the dipstick (oil cold) . The cdi engine ecu doesn't need to see good oil pressure before starting, but that engine is very sensative to fuel supply and return problems, are there any fault codes?

The CDi engine uses a typical Bosh common rail system. There can be a number of problems such as pump failure (unlikley unless its a very early version), rail pressure control valve failure, electrical failure such as pressure sensor, crank position sensor.

The Isuzu / Caterpillar oil pressurised system is totally different. It uses Unit Injectors similar to VW PD engines, except the Unit Injector is pressurised by engine oil. Obviously oil quantity and quality is critical!

My Van went Kaput near a local garage, who took it in to see if there were any obvious faults. I don't think they have the technology to find fault codes. Fill me in, I seem to remember seeing analysis gizmos at halfords for finding fault codes. How much is one for a Merc?

2 year old van, 45,000 miles, Merc dealers have now fitted new fuel pump and because "failure of the original means that steel particals go through the injectors" they replaced those too. Mercedes have stumped up 30% of the £1500 bill. Ouch!!! :(
