common rail diesel injection systems still require a pump to provide pressure (up to 1,600 bar in newer motors).
common rail engines are usually 'overseen' by some kind of ecu: injector opening times, fuel metering etc is varied in much the same way as with petrol engines, ie lots of variability.
in most (but not all) cases, common rail provides a lot more torque, power and economy - along with a reduction in noise and emissions.
