This will not stop unless the technology is such that, hand held phone call, services, social media etc are disabled when it detects one is in a vehicle. Sadly you can’t trust people to do the right thing.
But then your passengers would be able to use their phone & you wouldn't be able to use WAZE etc

I knew that was coming but, you all know what I meant…. Use the tech to it’s fullest to achieve the goal.

What about all this I’ve seen plastered over over pay phones news thingies that pop up from time to time, some fair high mounted cameras on poles to catch drivers with phones in their crotch, on their lap, tinkering away in the cubby area around the gear lever etc? Just make it it a painful punishment if caught using a phone in any manner.

you don't need cameras on poles. you can see the blue glow on their faces at they check their phones while waiting at lights/etc ;)

As a bus driver in the mad bonkers city of Brighton, seeing a huge number of idiots on their phones whilst driving,Inc HGV drivers BTW! Is shocking! The attitude is complete indifference to the law! Personally I'd make it a 3k fine endorsement for at least a year and a retest at the end to qualify for your licence back! Then and only then these selfish idiotic muppets might take notice? But only if enforcement is effective in the first place? Seen so many potential accidents too because these morons are not paying attention as their phone is their God to worship too and seems to take preference over everything else? Seen parents using phones whilst driving and the kids in the car too! ...crazy just crazy!! ....OK rant over!! ....thank you goodnight!!

I too see many phones being used while diving my HGV, sometimes it's very noticeable as they are approaching from the opposite direction. When I have noticed it, a blast on the truck horn reminds them that they are on their phone :D
I doubt confiscation will stop mob phone usage while driving. The phones need to be disabled for calls and texted when the car starts moving.
Manufacturers can do this to phones.

Simple rule to fix the issue is to make it illegal for a phone to be inside the passenger area of a vehicle whilst being driven. I.e it must be in the boot or a locked compartment.
In my van, phone plugs into the USB on dash, which then makes the big screen in the van the Sat Nav (Waze) hands free phone, and can read out what’s app texts / compose reply by me speaking.

Who would pay for the kit for that to be fitted to allow that to be done from another compartment?

Both my car and truck integrate with the phone to the point I do not need to touch it at all.
Messages, both sent and received, are voice controlled, calls made and received are the same. Sat nav also voice controlled.
No excuse in this day and age.
Its the social media slaves that are the worst problem.
Some people however, just refuse to conform on any level.

Also, what about people who walk around looking at their phones, instead of looking where they are going ?

Phone use has become an epidemic in 2022. Why are they so absorbed in something else ? Look at what you are doing, be present in the real world.

You would. If you want that functionality why should anyone else pay for it?

I'd like DAB and Bose in my Smart Roadster but don't expect anyone else to pay.

Big issue at the gym now , people spending much more time on their phones whilst occupying a piece of equipment than actually training.

No point talking to the "staff" about it as they are also constantly on their devices.

Some of the oldies have left as it is genuinely becoming a bit of a problem , especially if you dont have all day to fit in your training.

If it is not watching endless "swipes" of other peoples lives it is taking "selfies" and the latest craze seems to be having a camera set up to record your training then posting it on some media platform so someone else in another gym can watch / comment / like / criticise whilst occupying a piece of that gyms equipment.

I was mentioning the above to someone who has just returned form the States and at one gym they have a big yellow square marked out for phone usage only , no phones to be used whilst using the equipment , so it is obviously a world wide issue.

Try Africa these guys take a job then if unchecked will spend all day on mobile and when not complaining they are broke!!! . I really throw the toys out of pram when I am instructing a guy whose phone rings and he thinks I am paying him and waiting for him to finish on phone before I can continue with instruction. There have been many flying phones around here I can tell u. The flying huawie the airborne techno to name but a few they are crap at landing.

Most will tell you how long they were in the gym, I suppose it doesn't matter (to them) what they were doing while in there.

Can hear it now - "just had an awesome two hour sesh at the gym bruv" , unfortunately 90mins was spent on the phone and the only "burn" they had was from their swiping index finger.

I’ve got that functionality now, built in from the factory.
what I’m saying is do they think that a possible law change should retrospectively mean I cannot use the standard, legal at the time of build & purchase, functions in my vehicle?
and that I should pay for workarounds?

that would be like govt deciding that no glass can have any tint at all, and you will have to pay to replace all the glass yourself, at your cost.
It probably won’t happen.

I have analogue TV in the SL from the factory but can no longer use that functionality unless I fit some third party device.

No different.

If it's unsafe it seems reasonable that legislation should protect those at risk.

For me the banning of over bright and hi aimed blinding LED's would fall in to that description.

Maybe we should just bring back street light bulbs that actually light up the streets?
Everything is so low energy now that they are not fit for purpose.

And to start off on another foot ..All fancy reg numbers -- rude type etc , will no longer be issued by the DVL web site .All new reg numbers will be checked and scrutinised ,,and any that the DVL deem not suitable , by law will be removed from the register .And the law is to be changed for those who allready have them on there cars at the moment .
