correct idle on 2.3 16v

does anyone know the correct idle speed at tickover when the car is at normal operating temperature? mine is running at around 1000rpm which seems a bit too fast. also in the owners manual it states that the car should be run on 98 RON petrol. i dont know if the previous owner ran it on LRP but i have stuck unleaded in it. it seems to be pinking a bit. does anyone know how many degrees i should back off the timing by to allow for the slower burn rate of the unleaded fuel.

Most cars need to be retarded 3 degrees.

Pinking can be caused by coke build up in the combustion chambers, so a good dose of redex may not go amiss.

Hi thanx for the advice, i have nt managed to do any work on the car today (sunday) as it has been raining here most of the day.

The redex idea is good i had forgotten about that. i have a big bottle of the red stuff in the garage.

all that smoke ffrom the tail pipe !!!!!!!!!!!

got me confused now !

oh im a bit confused now i thought unleaded was a slower burning fuel from LRP ? maybe im wrong is LRP a 98RON rating like the old leaded fuel? i thought if unleaded was 95 RON then the timing needed to be retarded (slowed down) for the slower explosion time ? maybe im wrong ??

any idea what the tick ove should be ?

Hi all

Sorry diesel man can I just adjust your timing by another 2degrees. It should be 5 degrees retarded. Not that you can adjust the timing on a 16v anyway. As for the rpm 1000 is just right.
