Hi all, I've had my problem diagnosed as crank possition sensor on my cls,ive been told it's a relatively easy repair if you know were it is, however I cant seem to find anywhere online with a definitive answer as to were it is?? The guy in my local garage hasnt got a clue either,my brother in law is a mechanic and will do the job but it would be easier if we knew of any problems he may hit ,and the exact location, he has never done one on a Mercedes before.
    Any help would be great.
    Thank you

According to my Haynes manual on the om642 engine , it's accessed from underneath , remove the engine under shield and it is above the starter motor adjacent to the transmission bell housing

It can be a difficult job to do if the sensor is stuck and doesn't want to come out. Not only that, its in a horrible place on top of the transmission next to the firewall on the passenger side. Some indies remove it from above, some from below. I think there is just one torx bolt to remove and it should twist out after disconnecting the wiring .

Its one job I'd leave to a Mercedes independent workshop if you are unsure. Around £180 for the part and labour. Make sure you use a genuine Mercedes sensor from the dealer.
Google Mercedes independent workshop in your area. I wouldn't use a garage that didn't even know where it was.

There really isnt a Mercedes dealer for 20 miles, unfortunately I really havnt got time to take it into a Mercedes independent because there that busy they cant do it for 6 weeks, and out of the 8 garages in my local area unfortunately not 1 has done one before ,I'm really pretty stuck as I need it for work and I drive huge distances each week, its becoming a pain because if I pull over in a services for a pee I have to wait half an hour to leave lol

When engine stops next time .And as you try to start the engine look at the rev counter for movement on the needle ,no movement = CPS failing . You can check the cps for resistance .

I'll try that, looking at other peoples posts I imagine it is the case , I'm just paranoid because apparently it gets worse and cuts out whilst driving, has anybody got any pictures of location etc?

Your mechanic will know where it is from my description from the Haynes manual . It's not as if there will lots of sensors in that location

On petrol M112 /113 cars it's on the back of the block above the flywheel. Looking from the back it's at about the 10 - 11 o'clock position. Not sure on the OM series engines.

Parallel with cylinder bank 2, on the bell housing, held in with a T8 bolt.
