Hi folks,

I'm at that point where I need to decide pretty quick whether to get rid and get something I've always been against - a diesel.

Here's my problem - for the third month running, I've spent 600 quid on petrol. Suffice it to say, that is a LOT of money for anyone - let alone someone on my meagre salary.

So, I need to consider my options. Everything is screaming at me to get a diesel and halve, or even quarter my fuel costs instantly. But, apart from the fact that I don't like them, I still love my car. Besides, it's not as simple as that. If I were to get a diesel, it's need to be something modern ish - i.e. common rail (most certainly wouldn't be able to afford a Merc).

Now, that to me is saying something around the 6-7 grand mark to get something "decent". Trouble is, for that, I'd need to borrow more money - which, over the longest I'd ever want to borrow money for (3 years) would cost about £150 a month on top of the £140 I'm paying now. (I know I'd get three grand for mine part ex). That of course eats into the fuel savings I'd make by a fair bit.

It gets a bit more difficult. You may remember a while ago I popped up asking about low power - well, it's been established that it's the gearbox and we're looking at the best part of 2 grand to repair. (Car still very much driveable).

Add to that, the heater doesn't work. Well, it does - but not very powerful. I got the car in summer and whilst the air came out ice cold, it was on full blast and barely came out. Now that it's getting colder, I'm really struggling to de-mist the car. I've read on here that if you have this part or that part from an old S-Class you can do it on the cheap etc etc but I just want to take it into a garage and say - "The heater needs this part. Can you do it today?" How much would I be looking at for that?

These are all factors that I need to consider. Just when I make the decision to get rid, I drive it and want to keep it. I really do not want to sell the car. It's not so much that it's a Merc - I don't care about the badge really - it's just that it's a big (fast-ish) car that I've really grown to love. And I know that whatever I end up with won't be anywhere near as good. I'm talking Passat TDis and Mondeo TDCis.

Now then, I know you're all incredibly biased. But any advice, suggestions and thoughts would be very much appreciated. My decision is in your hands.

Many thanks - I know it's a very weird message!

Cheers,

Adam

Hi folks,

I'm at that point where I need to decide pretty quick whether to get rid and get something I've always been against - a diesel.

Its simple, just work out the cost of petrol and diesel over a year based on your current annual mileage. Add to that the cost of the car including any finance, add insurance costs, then service costs. Then add to that the depreciation over say 3 years.

You'll find that unless you do a significant annual mileage, diesel isn't all that cheap.

Never forget about depreciation. Newer cars depreciate more than older cars, so unless you're doing huge annual mileages then stick with the car you have tbh.

The heater uses hot water from the engine's cooling system. It shouldn't be too difficult to diagnose the problem. A simple test is to unplug the power connector to the duovalve, that way the valves should remain fully open (full heat). The duovalve is 2 small grey cylinders near the steering column under the bonnet. Just behind the offside front wheel arch.

Ah yes didn't see the bit about the 'full blast'.

The filter is accessed under the glovebox. Remove the plastic cover (the bit that sits above the shins/feet of the passenger), the filter is above that.
