Hi everyone, hope you are staying safe and well. On a not so happy topic, cars have been stolen around my area recently. I’ve decided I need to get myself a crook lock for my Mercedes GLA45. I have no idea which one to get, I went into Halfords and they said that they’re not sure if they have any that fit the AMG steering wheel with paddle shifters. Does anybody have a crook lock already which will fit the AMG steering wheel?
Thanks Jake

Just had a look at that auto ghost thing.up to you .I would not be adding MORE electronics at 400 plus or even 50 quid.quite enough headaches within design I certainly would not be adding more to that mix.

Frankly they are a waste of time.
Spend a bit more on an Autowatch Ghost.

Not true , a car was taken with Autowatch Ghost , best is to have a multi layered approach .

Where did I say an Autowatch Ghost was the only answer?
A crooklock however is a complete waste of time as they barely deter even amateurs.

The steering wheel locks used to be defeated in seconds 30 years ago. A quick look at Halfords website shows they haven't changed either.

Fitting one might encourage someone to steal the next car instead but unlikely on high value cars which are not easy to steal in the first place.

What sort of cars are being stolen and how? Modern Mercedes and BMW's tend to have pretty decent security built-in so either the keyless entry is "relayed" or the thieves break into your house and steal the keys.

This seems OK, from Halfords.

Taking the keys, either because they’re within fishing distance of the letter box or even though break in and threatened violence (that happened to a member here with his E63s) :( is probably the most common with desirable modern cars.

The two cars stolen where relatively new, one was a Mercedes GLC and the other a BMW 3 series. Apparently they left their keys by the front door and they hooked through the letter box ‍♂️

How was it taken?

What multi layered approach would you suggest?

My understanding is that to get past the "ghost" system they either have to up-lift the vehicle (MB has standard anti-towing) or be given the code. If they can get the code (presumably by coersion) they can get past anything else.

My neighbours son in laws M3 was stolen a few days ago, along with his wife's runaround.
They live in a townhouse and sleep on the second floor. The thrives kicked the front door in, grabbed the keys and were off before he could get down the 2 flights of stairs! Apparently the police were really good. The wife's car was found abandoned close by and the M3 was apprehended 60 miles away the next day.

Once upon a time, desirable cars were kept in garages. Now the cars are too big for the garages, or the garages are full of 'stuff'. Or converted to rooms...
(I sound like an old f*rt!)

Not to me you dont....but maybe I am one too. :D
I know many people that have a garage(or "car hole" as Moe Szyslak calls it) but not a single one of them keeps their car in it...and this is even if there is pysical space to do so but they are simply too lazy.
Having a garage was a critical factor in buying my house, and I would not have bought my current or previous 4 cars if I did not have a garage to keep them in.
Of course the current trend(that I personally dont get) for massive SUV's make most garages useless for their intended purpose.

Go and see your local auto electrician and get them to install a kill switch from the crank sensor. Its a old school way to stop them starting the engine and also get a tracker fitted incase the car is lifted onto a truck and taken.

Years ago there was a feature in an electronics magazine to build a little timer circuit.
With a switch well hidden under the dash you could start the car and it would run for a predetermined length of time then cut the LT feed so it would stop again unless the switch was on. Mine was set to 5 seconds. The theory was that thieves would think the car was faulty and move on.

Unfortunately they now just break into your home and threaten you and your family for the information on where the “switches” are, violence for them is as easy as breathing and they thing nothing of it. As @Blobcat mentioned, one of our members here had exactly that happen to them

John Laidlaw had one on his E63. Said it was brilliant

We have been married for 47 years & except for one 3 year period when we didn't have a garage, the cars have been garaged every night.
