Hi,The gearbox on my W211 E320cdi needs replacing because it is not changing gear properly and if i remember correctly there was a topic a while back about early w211s with faulty rads that mixed coolant with tranny oil? is this correct does anybody know? if so can you claim of Merc for the damage due to faulty parts, eg radiator? any help much appreciated cheers Dave

Possibly.

Symptoms of this are:

Droning at 1500-2000 revs, fluctuating revs.

What is your car not doing?

Glycol in the box does not affect the changes, it causes a humming and droning when pulling lightly in top from about 1700- 2500 RPM

yes this can and does happen, why they did not run a seperate cooler is beyond me, depending on your mileage age etc etc you could try to claim from mercedes on goodwill but may be to no avail,
they may contribute part cost only which compared to indie cost for full job is still more,

The symtoms are when in S mode hanging on to first for too long then hitting second with a bang, it gets worse when you give it more throttle if driven carefull not as bad when into second it seems OK, if put into W mode it changes smoothly cheers Dave

Need to have any fault codes read.

Could be:

Low oil level;
Conductor plate;
MAF;
Something else

Doesnt sound like Glycol contamination.

Oil level checked OK, what is the Conductor plate? and if it was the Maf would the car not run OK? it drives well apart from the box problem, thanks Dave

agree with above sounds like your car has been misdiagnosed in terms of cause of fault,

have you had the level checked by a reputable specialist

PLate is the electronics pack in the box. circa £350 fitted.

Maf can cause a whole host of issues not directly related to the engine. A fault code readout will point you in the right direction.

maf can sometimes cause holding onto gears then snapping onto next gear,
i have actually seen so called qualified technicians in dealers replacing valve body and electrics pack for maf faults.

best advice is get it to a good specialist to diagnose correctly

Is the MAF going down,, the torque converter is married closely to the output of the engine, its worth clearing the gearbox on STAR though that only has a tiny memory

Going on your posts i would get a sample of your oil tested to illiminate glycol ~(although it does not sound like)

If its all clear i would try an electrics pack, relatively simple and cheap compared to gearbox and radiator but i have the luxury of having parts to hand

As you say that it does not do it in W,,it cant as W is a second gear start.. We do get quite a few post on this nature, one was where you so call re adapt it, though most of us do not believe it,,there are those that swear by it

There is also the possibility of oil contamination in the gearbox ecu, as suggested you need someone to do a check on all the possible causes.

Is this the 7G gearbox?

There were lots of software updates regarding harsh 1->2 and also harsh 2->1 changes...is the car up to date re software (not all dealers seem to apply them as a matter of course)?

Which 320 engine?
