The Government study groups do come come up with some stupid ideas but this one takes the biscuit.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7803997.stm

A proposal to fit cars with limiters which will apply a cars brakes if it exceeds the speed limit. I am not a speed merchant but the thought that you may have just overtaken a slow HGV or tractor and in doing so gone above the road limit and as you pull back in the brakes automatically come on beggars belief. As least with the MB limiter you can instantly flick if off if circumstances dictate.
They talk about a voluntary system but we all know that means compulsory soon after.

Well as mentioned with any such device one should have the means to override it, our car can be overridden by Kick Down, but when used in this way as in splats post, kick down could be the last thing that you need.

And I just wonder how much these 'Government Study Groups' get PAID to come up with these ridiculous, ill-conceived 'ideas'. You couldn't make it up!!

I was reading the same article this morning and basically, it will never happen (in my opinion). The government makes too much money from Speeding plus all the investment in camera's, but they have to appear to be pacifying the lobbyist groups.

It may come in though as a cap on top speed, ie. 80mph!

In the good old 70's when we had 3 day working weeks I remember speed limit on motorways was 50 (I think). What happened was that all the vehicles "bunched" as no one wanted to exceed the limit but everyone (including lorries) was driving at the limit.
It was dangerous as the spaces between vehicles in each "bunch" was too small.
I note that the idea has been floated via the Brown Broadcasting Corporation.

You know what I think would make a real change to road safety? The banning of speedometers altogether.

Since when was the use of a speedometer required to drive safely? It isn't. The key to driving safely is to always be able to stop in the distance you can see to be clear ahead. I'd replace the speedo with those words, printed on every dashboard. A line about concentration, observation, and anticipation, would also work wonders.

People are obsessed with speed.

A lot of truth in what you say Parrot,,all of the roads around me are narrow and crowded with both pedestrians and cars, and yet all of the roads boast a 30mph limit. for most of them it would be unwise to travel at anywhere near this limit, and as you say one needs to drive at a safe speed so that you can stop with ease.

Where have all of these great big females come from that drive to the max that they can,in their 4 x 4's and drive straight at you even if someone is walking on their side of the road, they never ever think about slowing down or driving with any courtesy

Its another float it and see where it goes idea. Even the speed lobby groups have come out and said it was a dangerous idea.
I do like the idea of having the limit info available in the car as often you don't know what the limit is, but thats pretty much already availble on many satnavs. Its especially useful where speed limits have been set artificially low, presumably to increase revenue as with one local route that suddenly dropped from 60 to 30.

It will dissapear along with all the other silly ideas they get. After all, how would they enforce it? Manufacturers would need to install them, which really requires some EU intervention, someone would need to pay for it, what about used cars.. etc and how long until someone came up with a little gadget that tricked it into thinking it was always on a motorway? (faking a GPS signal can't be very hard!)
Nah - it'll never happen.

On the A339 between Newbury and Basinstoke some new cameras have been installed in the last year. Before the camera there is a sign which has the camera logo and also, on the same piece of signage, the speed limit. This is the only time i have ever seen this and i think it is the most sensible piece of signage i have ever seen. I think that 200m or so in front of the camera there should be a speed limit sign. The number of times i have gone through a camera at 30 as i have no idea of what the limit is where i am driving!

As for this technology, i very strongly disagree. its on the same list as the flipping road pricing think. more right wing dictatorial control!

Got to agree with you on the signs,, so many times you say to yourself, "what is the speed limit" and it would cost nore to include it on most

There there Dosco. Nice description, but a man of your resource could surely think of a really offensive acronym which we could then all use to save space on the server when discussing such cretins?

Technically it's a left wing plot but that's nit picking. ;-)
A true right winger would allow you to drive as fast as you'd like.

Interesting aside and a gripe of mine- why are Fascists right wing? After all, weren't the Nazis National "Socialists". It bugs me that lefties think they're the only ones that give a damn, when in reality they're just too naive to see that someone has to pay for it. but thats kids for you!

Just a thought ! have we scanned all the other Government news releases today ? Often when they throw up something totally rediculous it is to distract attention so that they can quitley slip out something really nasty under the smokesceen . It`s Called a "Good Time To Bury Bad News" (remember that ?)

As a driving instructor, I tell all my students, "Drive to the conditions or die!" speed limits become irrelevant, also when asked "Should I let that car in?" I simply reply, "Courtesy is a two way thing, if you expect it then give it, if you don't want to give it, then don't whinge when you don't get it." Usually the student then proceeds to "let that car in."

Cheers to all MB Owners, have a Happy New Year.
