i know MB dealers were noted at one stage for trying to sell of an old model with a new plate at good discount, but i got a real shock today. i believe the car 'lives' somewhere in carlisle, but not locally registered. next time i see it, i will try to grab a pic of it. just howlong did MB dealers keep trying to sell W124's for after the 210 came along? ive got the last of the pre facelift 210's on a 'V' plate, and this 124 i saw today was a 'T' plate! whats going on?:confused::confused::confused::confused:

You could buy a write off, and re register it

Could be something like a Singapore model or some such place and have been imported or just one that didn't get registered until late.

Then again, could be some crims - believe that number plate theft happens to avoid police traps.

wouldnt that get either a q plate or another age related plate?

again, would a re reg from abroad not get a plate relavant to the original registration date? i have my doubts about it being a dodgy plate though, as the area i saw it in is one area the local police spend much of their time! i thought it would be a late reg, but i also thought that dealers werent allowed to keep a car more than 6 months old (from build date) without registering it now? incidentally, before this ruling (if it exists) came into being, there was an 84'A' reg plate, on a cortina! and they only made it to 'y' plate to run the stock out when the sierra came along!

Years ago you could re register a car if you could prove that it had been re built,,they could have tightened up now making that no longer possible

im not sure if its possible or not. there again, surely i would stilll get an age related plate, not a newer than the car was plate? i just wondered if anyone else had seen similar things and what the latest plate was that a car was legitimately fitted with, relative to its time of being replaced

I looked at one in 1999 - a company called Trade Sales on the A4 in Slough bought a load of Japanese export cars all manual E220 Saloons, apparently they sat around in storage in Japan for 4 years or so before being brought back to the UK (due to being right hand drive). They were being sold off for £13k if my memory is correct, which was an absolute bargain (However, I bought a Rover 75 - I can now see the error of my ways)

Currently Capri 280, 2 Litre S and 3 Litre Ghia
Cars can stick around unsold in dealers for a long time.

I have seen X reg Mk 2 Escorts (W reg Mk 3's).
I have seem 2000/01 "X" Escorts when the Focus started on a S/T plate.
There are 5 Capri 280 "F plates known and a "G" reg with the first ones March 87 "D".

There are also unregisted vehicles around as well. "Q" plates are the domain of kit-cars and cars of undiscernable manufacture/rebuild. Now if you have one, it would be better to fit an age related plate. You can do this using the vehicles "VIN" which will have the month of manufacture.

By the number of cars at Avonmouth, these will need to be sold and are all Euro 4 rather than the upcoming Euro 5 emissions standard, some people are going to be screwed by this government when the have to buy Road Tax in the future.

My experience of this is to buy a car with a short build/sale date because it has not been sat around for months (e.g. September 1st car built 9-11 months earlier - slightly different now with the 6 month reg changes).

Blob's pretty correct here. Quite a few were bought & assembled in India. Poor build quality & electrics. Most were white E220s with wheel trims & VERY high suspension. I wouldn't touch one..........

escorts were always carried on after the launch of the focus. they were still in production alongside the focus till 2000, and the escort van until about 2002/2003. ive never seen a 280 brooklansd on later than an e plate, and was unaware any lasted till g reg as there were only 1038 built. however the point of this thread was to see how widespread it is, and to see if anything has changed since rules were introduced stating that cars now have to be registered after 6 months. i know dad saved a fortune on a mondeo this way, back in 1996!

It s only based on the 124 platform - the bodywork was "reworked" and is different.
