Hello, I have a W213 with the OM654 engine at 196k. I’ve noticed that deep rumble sound that I’ve heard people say is the rocker arms.

Anyone had the same problem? How big a job and cost is it?

And are there other parts worth doing at the same time?

I’m up and down the motorway chauffeuring on a good day, and pounding the streets as a taxi driver on a bad day, so the car is my livelihood, and I trust nobody better than those driving the same vehicles.

Thanks in advance.

I’ve talked about this very subject to one of our local MB Independents who basically said the rocker wear problem is a by-product of extended oil changes and does come in at the mileage you’ve quoted so it sounds like a top end overhaul is required probable cost £1500+

I appreciate the reply.

Regarding the extended oil changes, I think it’s about 14k interval on the dash right? I’ve definitely got over that by 1 or 2k on the past. This is due to the fact I do about 1500 miles per week, so it’s easy to rack up. I think when this is done I might just do it at 10k intervals instead.

Now when it comes to the top end overhaul, I have a few questions if you wouldn’t mind.

What particular parts would I need?

I’ve read Rockers, lifters, water pump and cam chain mentioned on the forums.

My brothers mate works at Mercedes, so I can get a discount, but would you recommend third-party or dealer only?

Is this the kind of job I decent mechanic can do or, only a Merc Specialist?

Had the gearbox service done last week which set me back £400.

This sums it up - I would definitely get an MB specialist to do the job

It may need be new camshafts you won’t know until it’s stripped

That’s the first video I found. I wonder what the labour costs is. Any idea?

Not sure, sorry, it can all add up with cam shafts, rockers, timing chain (engine out job), gaskets and labour, my best guess for that lot is £2k+

Does the camshaft & actually chain need doing, or just the rockers/lifters to fix this problem?

Is the water pump a hard one these?

I’ve never owned a W213 with the OM654 engine my son had one for 4 years hence the conversation I had with an MB specialist when we were concerned about premature rocker wear and it was his view I mentioned above.

Post your location and you’ll get advice on which MB Independent to have a chat to

Birmingham based.

Did he recommend a certain distance to change the oil at all?

We replace on average two cam sets a week, we also replace the timing chain at the same time. We seen them break as early as 140k miles and some still not have a problem at 200k+. Personally I wouldn’t risk it, especially as it stripped down.
Personally I think using stop/start causes premature wear. Sorry can’t post video of worn chain @ 135k miles.

Do you know my stop/start has worked on a hand full of occasions in the 70k I’ve done.

Do you have any advice on what parts I should be changing at 196k whilst doing the rockers?

Is the cam set replacement part of the rocker arm issue? What does that cost?

Definitely the timing chain and inspect the cam set for wear, worn rockers can score the cam lobes.

Got a quote. £600 labour for rocker/lifters/cam from the YouTube videos guys. Parts can be £1200 but my brothers mate works for Merc so may get 20% off.

Timing chain was told is a separate 3/4 day job and £1700 alone!

Are any of the aftermarket parts decent or would you only use dealer?

Has anyone come across this website? They appear to sell gen parts as all the OEM part numbers work on their website and the total is in the £800s. https://www.oemstar.co.uk/?https://www.oemstar.co.uk/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=mercedes+benz+parts+general&utm_source=google-ads&utm_campaign=UTM Tracking GADS Search Mercedes Parts General Online&utm_agid=153085524634&utm_term=mercedes parts online&creative=661403439822&device=m&placement=&gclid=Cj0KCQjwldKmBhCCARIsAP-0rfyXMbrYWgytjYMrkg2nh_e-oyhuI9RvL4rRnTXxUpfGh8_5bSweBd0aAuquEALw_wcB

Took it to a Merc tech yesterday and asked him to listen. He said that sound like an air intake is loose. Upon checking the raw intake clip was broken. He held it shut and the issue seemed to die off.

A6540940097 is the part. Seems to be a lot of ones with the same broken clips for sale on eBay, so it’s common. Expensive piece of plastic near £200!

Brilliant lol

It pays to have faith in Mercedes and respect for MB engineering.

Basically if ur not well off and or can't fix them urself (which makers are hell bent on making as difficult as possible) , don't buy a benz buy somat easy to fix, and that's going to get harder!
