Has anyone successfully installed a non-MB diesel engine, e.g. Ford, Peugeot, VW, Japanese, diesel engine in a 123 series. If so were you able to purchase any of the parts used, i.e. bellhousing adaptor, suspension pump adaptor etc. If you had the parts made, did you keep drawings etc. I would be very interested indeed to hear of your experiences,

The dearth of responce on the subject of putting another makes diesel engine in your Merc does not surprise me.  Why ever would you want to do that?  The Merc diesel is a good one.  I think everyone is as shocked as me.  Now if you were talking about Land Rover diesel engines - thats different - what a dog that old 2 and a quarter was.

Roger,
I understand your concern for my sanity! The fact is that some modern diesel engines are hugely more efficient than the MB design. I wanted to trawl around for ideas and opinions, you have given me yours. Don't be surprised though if in a couple of years you hear about this bloke who's got a 123 estate that does 50mpg, 'cos it could be me!

Roger is right. Mercedes diesels may be slow and rattley but they are efficient due to using in line fuel pumps to create higher injection pressure. You will only get better by going for direct injection ie. Transit, Montego or VW Tdi and new direct crop. Is your w123 worth the hassle and cost?
