I had a notion of a concept. A large diesel engined hatch/small coupe as a AMG model. Initially the thought came to me with Audi's range. @ my ex work place one of the directors told me he had a go of an A3 3.2FSi DSG. He isn't really a car fella but said it would be the one sporty car he'd have but the 16mph thing put him off, so a 3.0Tdi A3 would have been just a treat

Audi presently make an S3 with a blown 2 litre petrol and before that there was a 3.2FSi V6 that topped the range. Couldn't they have slotted in a 3.0TDi. It would have been mental fun.

Given that the CLC is W203 based, could they make a CLC 320cdi and maybe turn up the power a bit to make it a CLC 32AMG CDi. Or how about the 420cdi engine in there, 350 economy with 500 performance.

I have therefore put a poll up to see whether my idea is just silly or whether I am not alone in wanting such a model.

PS feel free to say what choice you want, there is no shame in diesel motoring.

Economy and quality.I've just done a 978 mile round trip in my 220 cdi and averaged 47.99 mpg. NOt motorway driving but not disappointed with that. At one point the computer said I was getting 60.1 but I did my estimate on a full tank start and a fill up at the end with the amount put in in between.

Great idea. Audi will produce diesel convertibles, (son has a current A4), but MB will not.

I would love to put the 320 CDI engine into my SL. I am sure the performance would not suffer, and to do that at 40 mpg! With the hood down, you get very little engine noise and with the hard top on, no more than a saloon or coupe. So why not?

I'm fairly sure you can get the CDI engines in the convertibles in the rest of europe just not over here.

Do they not do a 320cdi clc?
With 224bhp and enough torque to pull down a building I'd have thought that in performance car terms it would be the no brainer choice. AMG could fettle it a bit I guess or else just pop in the Brabus chip.
The thing is that people avoided diesels in the past because they were smelly, noisy, had no low end power delivery and ran out of grunt above 4krpm. I love my 270 but to be fair, the cap does fit.The current range however, don't fit that description so I'm always amazed that anyone would buy a 350 petrol. Looking at the figures - performance is identical, but if you take torque into account, mid range on the cdi has got to leave the 350 for dead.

What AMG could do with a diesel I'm not so sure. They tend to specialise in bigger than sane engines, so I guess if they could squeaze a tuned V8 diesel in there it could be a laugh, whilst still having sensible economy. After all, a clc with a V8 diesel could be geared so high that idle is 70mph. I suspect the torque would shred the rear tyres though. Allegedly the 63 is a bit wayward at the best of times so a fettled cdi would be even worse!

I've driven the range rover v8 diesel a few times and I struggled to tell it apart from the V8 petrol. Noise, power etc all very similar. In fact the only real indication as to which I was driving was from the trip computer. So, yes a 400cdi in the E would be nice ....

The E320CDI sits at 1,600 revs at 70 so the V8 will only pretty much be idling as you say. The mid range is very good as the S500 a couple of weeks agao noticed, 30-70 and he wasn't getting away and I wasn't pressed all the way into the carpet either.
Slight problem I have though is that I've just had a test ride on a Ducati 1098S and need that kind of acceleration in my life

CLC only available with the 200 or 220cdi engines at the moment looking at the configurator.

AMG did make a version of the 270 engine, it was bored out to 2.9 and called the C30AMG which was in the C class coupe.

So much of the AMG appeal is noise though and a diesel will never cut the mustard in that department. The RRS TDV8 is the best sounding diesel I've heard but the engine still rattles.

Yes and no, with a decent exhaust on the back, and a large in take it would sound alright. Even my 4 pot gets praise for its sound by other "petrol head passangers".

I know the regular CLC could take the 320cdi engine as it was fitted to W203's. The engine bay in 203's took a V8 so the 420cdi could fit in. It would shred tyres but what a fun, but sensible car.
