Howdy all,

I appreciate this subject is a little long in the tooth, however I'm late to the party and have recently noticed my 2013 c220 is due a Diesel software "update"... (oh and an airbag recall?)
To all those who have been through it, what are the real world negatives of having the recall done? Will I suffer real economical/performance drawbacks? Is the engine management issue common, and what does it tend to entail?

Thanks!

I think one of the negatives are that you will lose some of your fuel economy, part of the software update is to reduce emissions. I have seen reports of up to 10% reduction in fuel economy. I personally, if I had a diseasal that is, would not have it done for that reason alone. :(

If your car is a 220d ie, EU6, I personally wouldn’t have the software upgrade your car would be susceptible to the Nox sensor issue, ie, EML after the update and sensor renewal

Thanks for the reply, sounds grim at best... I'll leave it alone then, especially considering todays fuel prices

Thanks for that, everything seems to be pointing to "avoid at all costs"

Mine will be getting done (R350) and I expect to take an initial hit on economy but from what I've read the vehicle relearns it's adaptations and returns to pretty to close to pre-update economy and behaviour.

The Nox sensor problems seem mainly to affect EU6 cars anything with ‘d’ suffix

In addition to the above issues the AdBlue dosing is increased, this appears to give more AdBlue issues (as reported on this forum)

Not yet. Waiting till Rose is all sorted first as we need to rely on it for hospital trips as the 230 is too difficult for her to get in and out of if she needs an operation.

Some of us didn’t get the choice; on my previous car back in December 2020, whilst in for MOT, MB of Stockport (LSH Auto) decided to carry out the emissions update without my consent (indeed without even so much as mentioning it to me).

They then proceeded to tell me a pack of lies in an attempt to cover their tracks.

I’m sure not all Mb dealerships would act in such an unethical manner, but just putting it out there.

Before the update my Adblu tank was almost full and read 14,300 miles worth was left.
After, it read 6,800 miles left, tank still almost full. MPG appears to have suffered also.
Early days so I'm monitoring to see if it improves any.

Its worth taking a pic of the dash with the fuel usage data before it gets the update as it wipes that record. Then in time you can compare what the difference is. Not as precise as tank to tank, but gives the same data as before and after.

I didn't do that, hence advising to do it. :geek:

I had it done last year, they couldnt tell me exactly what it was going to do and they were virtually insisting it got done, they offered some freebies with it. I agreed in the end in a moment of weakness.. Initially I did not notice anything untoward, but it became apparent over the next month or so that the mpg had been negatively affected. Once winter hit I have found it has had quite an effect on my local running and around town runs, average is about -15% impact.

Personally I’d swerve it, but if you go for the airbag recall they might do it anyway.

Our SLC250d 2016 was done about 18 months ago, initially it wouldn't go into 9th until about 75mph. But after about 2 months it was going into 9th at about 68mph, as it did before the software update.
As regards to economy I have not seen any change at all.

I've not noticed any difference in economy either.
I can physically nudge mine into 9th at just over 50mph although the auto box doesn't do it til around 60 ( if I'm cruising with a very light throttle)

I had the airbag recall done, they didnt do the software recall.

I think my dealer atleast only does what you are booked in for and are good in that respect.
