An excellent pictoral view of your garage project. For future reference when you want to paint large areas of pebbledash etc you need something like a Graco airless sprayer. This will spray paint straight from the can without any need to thin it. All you need to alter is the size of the tip you put in the gun but either a .015 or .017 will do. They also give you a choice of fan size with these tips so you can have anything from a 4 inch wide spray up to 10 inches. Most large hire shops rent these out. You can spray an average 3 bed detached house in a day. The longest part is masking up the windows etc. Saves hours and gives a better finish then brushing.

I did try an airless spray gun I had but that was thrown in the bin very soon after trying it. Thanks for the tip though, I'll remember that for future reference

Great write-up. It does show just how much work goes into a decent garage. I expect that a big garage is only about 30% more work than a small one...

My ideal garage will have an outside compressor room where the compressor, jetwash & other big bits of kit can live

I don't need central heating, I've fitted an air-con unit which also heats plus I have a 3 phase fan heater to keep the cold at bay.

The compressor is a Hydrovane and although not silent it isn't obtrusive so it can run in the background without any problems, as for the powerwash, it's kept in the house basement next to where I wash the cars.

What a project. I bet you are knackered.

Why do you need sarking board under the slates?

The traditional way to do a roof was to use sarking boards.

If using plywood it is difficult to hammer nails into it and you end up with more broken slates than you wanted.

If using fibreboard and it gets wet it swells up and rots at a faster rate than Mercedes cars rust

A diesel
Sarking is to make the roof stronger against wind forces, in general only used in Scotland now.

Not so much a perfectionist Thumper, more that I hate doing the same job twice, so I would rather do it properly the first time

I remember those exact words from an excellent fitter when I was a wee apprentice!

I have been through every picture/post, what an excellent job.
That Garage is stunning, Loft area, 3phase and air supply, ramp, AC...wow.
I'm so impressed, well done buddy.... I want one :(

I remember when I was first married and I needed a piece of 2"x2" timber of a certain length for my first project. I never had a saw to cut the timber so I asked the supplier if he could cut it to size. A 6' length was 50p but a 31" cut piece was £2.00 so from then on I decided that I would do as much as I could myself.

Through learning over the years and making mistakes I have found out that if the job is done properly the first time then it saves a lot of time and effort from not having to go over the snagging jobs. I must admit that with this garage built there hasn't been a single snag which makes me realise that I must have done something right.

November 2008 I called Building Control and asked for a site visit to discuss drainage. The officer came out and had a look around and more or less told me that I should do what ever I thought best. The day he came to visit me there was no floor, no electricity, no drainage, no gutters. 7 months later when the build was completed I called to ask if I could have an inspection to enable my Building Warrant to be completed and the job signed off. I was told that the officer had seen enough when he visited me some 7 months earlier and the certificate would be in the post. To me that really says it all.

Wow, what a garage and fleet of cars!

I worked as a builders labourer in-between years at uni so understand all the blood, sweat and tears that must have gone into that build!! You can now reap the rewards for your effort :)

PS - Is that a loft in the garage or servants quarters?
