After a few expensive trips to several mechanics in my area failed to solve my cars problems, I have decided to adopt a do it yourself approach at least with many of the minor fixes. I was just wondering what the best manual is for my car which is a 97 E420 with 120K. I hear much talk of the haynes manual but have also read in a few threads that this is missing alot. I bought the Mitchel cds off ebay which supposedly contained everything but I was disappointed with how little information they actually contained for my car. Does anyone know where I can get a good manual with detailed explanations? A factory manual would be great. Thanks...

Sorry Jon, there is nothing out there, you will have to deal with each fault as it comes along, most points on the car are standard practice.

Hi Jon,

Use http://www.detali.ru/webCat3.aspx?MID=QZX&RID=WKW&VID=GKN to look into the component groups of your car, so you can get an idea of what is what and how to approach a job. Also, scan this forum, ask questions and hopefully, even it you cant do the jobs yourself, you'll know exactly what a job entails before requesting garage time.

Doing the work yourself, where possible, is worth it.

NB. The site is in Russian, so play around as the diagrams and parts are in English, Scottish, Welsh, Irish, American, Australian, South African........ :)
NBB. Use http://babelfish.altavista.com/tr , paste in the link and select translate Russian to English. An example is>: http://babelfish.altavista.com/babe....detali.ru/cat/oem_mb1.asp?TP=1&F=210272&VIN=

That's a damn useful link, thanks mate :)

I'd suggest getting a Haynes Manual if you've no or little servicing experience. Although there's a lot missing there's a lot in there too. The Merc ones suffer compared to some other marque haynes mauals i've used from squeezing too many models into one book, generalisation at the price of specialisation. That said, it's a good starting point.

I've never used any others, so I can't comment on how it matches up.

Thanks...I finally know how to read that russian page now! I'll try the haynes manual so I don't have to ask a million basic questions on this forum. Has to be better than those stupid CDs. Thanks again.

Try ebay for a manual - much cheaper than off the shelf @:)
