Does yor diesel engine rattle first thing on these cold mornings? Mine does it sounds like a bag of old spanners!. To be more technical it sounds like a tappet needs adjusting. Ater 1 mile or so the sound has totally gone and the engine is very quite (220 CDI 2002 with 90k on the clock) Do others have the same problem? The sound is signifiquently worse than on VW range of deisels.

Yes my 200cdi does the same, 29000 miles, its common due to the oil being thicker on these cold mornings!!

I thought mine was bad until I heard my neighbours X-Trail start up the other morning, now I know what a real bag of spanners sounds like!

All diesels rattle their bolts off on cold mornings. Not sure about the very latest ones but a 2002 with 90k, there'd be something wrong if it didn't.
Do remember, its a lot bigger engine than most of the VW range. If it quietens down after a min or so, its fine.

Most newer engines have either hydraulic tappets or overhead cams. Hydraulic tappets can be noisey until the oil charges them.

My neighbour has a C220 CDi estate... It's quite in comparison with her on the other side with the 2.8TD Frontera! The noise is MONUMENTAL, even AFTER a session down the pub, it still wakes me up!

I should explain,

I go for the session and get in about 4am... She wakes me up by starting her Isuzu with a Griffin on the nose for work. However, the C220 doesn't wake me up.

I've NEVER known a noise like it, in my life.
