As title, I live in East London have about 100k mileage looking to get those inspected and cleaned - any recommendations?

Cheers

A good premium fuel and a thrashing
I always use premium fuel. That didn't stop my timing chain snapping which was due to carbon build up.

Is there a life span for the dpf, sure I hear or read many moons ago that dpf should be replaced at 100k miles, maybe I am wrong, or for newer cars this is not the case any longer.

Diesels love to run hard for long periods. As above get it on the motorway and give it the beans, that will sort out your carbon build up ;) Edinburgh is a lovely this time of year.

Just drive normally and allow the car to do the DPF regen as and when it needs to.

A motorway thrash just succeeds in filling the DPF with the unburnt fuel.

Of course, if the journey is purely undertaken to do the thrash it has to be the complete opposite of the intention of the DPF and any other emission reduction systems.

steveq is correct.

The car will clean the DPF when needed. It does however need a chance to do so and a motorway drive for at least 30 mins will do the job.

Thrashing a diesel generates soot which is what clogs the DPF up.

Ultimately the ash build up (not soot) in the DPF will required the DPF to be removed and cleaned. You can't burn ash off; it needs to be physically washed out.

I've not heard of a life on MB DPFs but at some point the car will throw a fault code when the DPF is full. It will probably depend on the car usage, maybe it could happen at 100k miles but it could be good to 200k.

I have found that the DPF clean will occur as needed without a motorway drive.
A couple of times I have noticed that there was a hot/burning smell and the exhaust tip was very hot - indicating a DPF clean in operation, after a city/suburban trip without ever getting anywhere near motorway speeds or revs.

I would like to install the DPF clean process activation light that others on here have pioneered.

It's an interesting question which type of driving causes most unburnt diesel fuel molecules on a modern diesel because at fuller throttle the egr remains closed and the egr when open is hugely responsible for incomplete combustion .

On a 2000's Ford tdci you can see a guff of smoke as the turbo spools up and their manufacturer smoke coefficient figure on the main VIN reflects their bonfire.

This is a interesting thread, so really one doesn’t have to do a long motorway drive once a month in order for the regen to take place. I say this, as I have also noticed the car regen on the normal city drives I do, so letting the car do its thing when it decides to should be fine I guess.

Also how long is the regen process.

But what does one do when one reaches the destination half-way through a regen.......?

I believe once you restart the engine, the regen will continue where it left off.

How I understand it, if the regen process is interrupted, it will resume upon restart, regardless of the parameters, but my understanding could be wrong, sure there will be others who will have more understanding then I.

If you know it is doing a regen and is mid way, and if you an afford another 5 mins in the car, you can keep driving and the faster the roads the better.
If you've got to work or wherever and there is a hard time limit, then you'll just have to park up, let the engine bay bake and it will restart again later.
