We did similar to Chamonix and back (though we did use a few toll roads - most notably the Millau bridge).Indeed. I drove from Calais to Rennes, Right across France on back roads years ago. Was amazing and we didnt pay a cent. Well at least I never got a ticket.
Yeah ours wasn't quite that far at 1900 miles...I'll raise you 2600 miles in 19 days in the 968 cab a few years ago - started in Santander after a rubbish ferry ride, across the top of Spain to Santiago then back t'other side of the mountains, through the mountains to Lourdes, across to the Millau then north slowly to just south of Epernay. We had to take the motorway across the Millau (after visiting the visitor centre underneath it) but other than that it was all motorway free until just south of Calais. I think the longest days drive we did was 250 miles, fabulous holiday especially for left footed wife who got to cuddle St James and get mass at Lourdes (while I was having a beer or two!!).
Absolutely 100% agree with this, not for the savings, but for the experience.Take the N-Routes next time, zero tolls, not much traffic and see some of France
Exactly. Used to go thru Spain at night arriv border at dawn if poss. Lovely early morning run Midlands to faro..I did Bedford to Praia Da Luz in Portugal in the SL in 2014.
No toll roads, just normal. Got out of Spain as quick as poss and drove all the way down Portugal. Found some lovely off grid B&Bs too.
Incredible memories!
Over the years some of the pleasure of travelling the RN roads has been removed by the supplanting of X road junctions withTake the N-Routes next time, zero tolls, not much traffic and see some of France
I fly regularly to Faro then hire car to Praia Da Luz but am considering driving all the way this year, what route is best, how long and approximately how much?I did Bedford to Praia Da Luz in Portugal in the SL in 2014.

I've done that as well then take the long drive backAn alternative worth considering is to take a Brittany Ferry to Spain
Something I have done many times. Sometimes we go by ferry one way & drive the other through France.

It can be have to balance time / money / miles. I loaded 20:00 Sat evening and was 08:00 Monday morning in Spain rested and straight onto nice driving roads and up into the PyreneesI’ve looked into that in the past but I will be on my own and just car and driver worked out quite expensive
Did it in October last year for the 6th time. It is a notable construction as Kiwi says.We did similar to Chamonix and back (though we did use a few toll roads - most notably the Millau bridge).
It was a superb trip in the little Roadster.

I'm afraid it'd be crass to answer as the last time I went was 2015 and I expect a lot has changed in 7 years.I fly regularly to Faro then hire car to Praia Da Luz but am considering driving all the way this year, what route is best, how long and approximately how much?
