Guys,

If any of you have them, how long did it take in the past to transfer your number plate to your new vehicle?

The DVLA are taking an age and have quoted it could take upto six weeks!!?

Does anyone have any experience of this as I am getting really frustrated not being able to drive my lovely new S......

Please allay my worst fears!!

With most car dealers they do it in 4 days, as they take the papers to their local office. Though local offices do not do the transfer it does speed things up.
My car took 10 days through the post 2 years back.

My brothers new car took 5 days via BMW

The rules keep changing. When I did mine, they said they could take up to 14 working days (3 weeks). In the end it was done in around 2 weeks.
The dealer takes in the paperwork but I don't think any of us realise just how complicated it is to enter 2 reg numbers and a couple of references into a computer screen and press "Go". After all, they are doing it for such a bargain price (given the massive workload involved) that they can't hire extra staff to handle the volume so we have to accept a delay. It used to be done much quicker in the old days, when it wa spaper based, in fact I have had it done while I waited on a few occasions, but with the improvements of technology and networking meaning that the offices now have a direct link to the dvla, clealy it is going to take longer.
I feel a letter to my MP coming on .....

I have a couple of private plates and can't recall ever waiting more than 2 weeks for a transfer (although DVLA always tell you a worst case.)

It shouldn't be stopping you using your new car though - you drive it with the reg plate already assigned to it. When the DVLA send through your certificate for the change over you then swap the plates and the tax disk and notify your insurance company of the new number plate.

You can do this but personally I would never collect a car with the old plate on it. To be honest, part of the reason I have a private plate is to hide it's age from the Jones's. The snobs think I've bought a new merc and only I and the bank manager know different. To drive round for 2-3 weeks with the original plate means the cat it out of the bag.

Very True, I was under the impression the car is already at home sitting on the driveway.

If it's a brand spanking new unregistered car - I must admit don't know what happens. Does a brand new car still get registered with a number plate of it's own right first (eg AB58 CDE) and then the dealer arranges the transfers of the private plate straight onto it??

I've never purchased a 'brand new' car, I've always put my private plates on retention a month or two before I come to sell my old car, then purchase a new car, then organise putting the plate onto the new vehicle.

I put my number plate on rentention last wednesday, this isn't a problem as the dealer is happy to take my car in as p/x, prep it for sale and wait for the new docs to come through, my problem is with the S!

The S had another cherished plate which was put on retention last tuesday, the DVLA still haven't sorted it all out and I am getting impatient! This is all through the dealer who took the forms down there himself and will be collecting himself, no post involved!!

What is the world coming to when you cant key something so simple on a computer, it's not like they get 1000's a day in each office for christ sake!

Rant Over :-(

I have done several and can't remember having a problem.

The dealers take longer because they gather a few together and do them as a batch. I have tended to do mine by post with our local DVLA (Worcester) and have been pleasantly surprised to receive the information by return of post. The tax disc is enclosed with the paperwork, so is the endorsed MOT if applicable. The new V5 does take longer (produced centrally) and with 2 changes in quick succession, that may be the snag slkr170 is having.

So, it can be quick - anyone telling you otherwise is not trying.

For first registrations, the Stealership said to me that my current insurance was not valid (it is) and insisted that I have an insurance cover note which MB Insurance will issue foc for 7 days in order to register the car. I presume they were hoping that, having done that, you just stay with MB Insurance for convenience. I thought it was very expensive and reverted to my own provider within the 7 days. :)

Told you I was smooth .................

The delay with mine was that we had to wait for the log book to come through in my name before we could transfer my plate.

Haha! Poor Helen!

If mine takes 5 weeks then I think i'll be jumping out the window of my apartment!

At least Ruth Kelly resigned this morning as MP for Transport, maybe we can now get someone who can speed up the process back to the good old days???

I want my S!

If your V5 doesn't arrive you just have to keep calling DVLA for a replacement. They have no way of tracking the delivery and won't send a V5 out except by untracked mail

When i put my number on my CLK I just took Log book with new keeper details, my tax disc and cherished number certificate and the local dvla office did it there and then. the new log book came within 1 week but the new plates were on the car in half hour.

Now then, as a little twist to this thread, I have a personal plate on my MB and it was transferred by the dealership within about 5 days. However, I have just bought the Mrs a personal plate but she has a car on a three year contract hire deal through my business. Can I put the new plate on this car (a superb quality renault clio!), or do I just keep it on retention until the three year deal runs out (only 2 years to go!)?

I suppose I could just ring Capital Bank leasing and ask!

I had my last company car on a PCP deal (Leaseplan) in which the car was registered to me and I held the V5. Personal plate was no problem.

I chose not to keep the car at the end of the agreement (their settlement payment was too high and better deals were available) so I removed the plate and returned the car. No problem either end.

I am sure they deal with this daily - I would enquire about their position - hopefully, you will be pleasantly surprised. :D
