Good day folks, my EM light became intermittent last year but car drove fine, it reappeared in January, I noticed my mpg had deprecated, it then went back off the day before my MOT was due (lucky), it had a B1 service on Monday when it came back on and the mechanic plugged it in and said it showed an electronic fault with the exhaust flap ?? Do any of you understand what he meant, he said I would probably need a new exhaust .

Was it plugged in a star tool? It will show the fault and will also show what needs to be done to rectify the fault.

I'm not sure, the mechanic just said you have a code P047513 which is an error in the exhaust flap.

Confirm the fault with MB xentry diag. Some cars have a replaceable motor bolted to the exhaust, some have it fully integrated into the rear exhaust system so the whole section has to be replaced.

I have confirmed that it is an external motor and sprayed it with lube, it seems to move ok but don't think the flap inside the exhaust is moving, is there any way I can bypass the motor to remove the EM light on my dash.

Unbolt the motor and then plug it in and see if the car can move it. Its usually the motor!

You can bypass it with a resistor, but you might get EGR codes and a blocked dpf as that it's primary purpose.

Just an update folks, I sprayed WD40 into motor and all around that area even the other side of exhaust where the flap would most likely swivel, two days later EM light went off and has been ok since. Thanks for all the advice.
