The more I read about these cars the less I want one. I’m currently running a VW T5 Caravelle 2.5tdi manual and want something with better economy but still able to pull my 1700kg caravan and take 4 bikes and 3 kids.

I have a 212 E350CDI 7G manages 48mpg over the year but nearly all on long runs. It will manage 50/52 mpg on a run down to London.
The wife's SLC250CDI 9G manages 50mpg over the year including all our town driving. It will manage 68/70mpg on the same run down to London.
Yes the SLC is lighter so lower the consumption by a few mpg. The 9G is a much nicer box.

If you read forums you will find loads of problems with every make/ model as that's what forums are about. Also euro 6 related issues is the same for all brands.

On our way home from a weekend away Glamping, that we won in a competition that was staying in a shed in the garden of a micro brewery in Wales. Wifey took this as I was determined to get home on the fuel in the tank after paying £1.51 per litre at Tesco in Chepstow.

It shows 60mpg at 71mph 113kph in 9th at just under 1400rpm 01c1ebae-fe04-41f1-8429-ba74f49195ec.JPG

Absolute load of old cobblers really, but shows how you can spin the numbers. Reality is 38.4mpg at best tank to tank. Or about 20% more fuel burned since the software upgrade that makes it cleaner, apparently.

I had the software upgrade and saw a rise in consumption but after a couple of thousand miles it is virtually the same as before. The gearbox behaves the same also.
I had a loan E class with 9G box and it is definitely smoother than the 7G on my car but I'm still happy with the one I've got.

Ignore any comments on fuel consumption that aren't averaged over a reasonable period. Everything else is meaningless, really.

The W212 estate makes a great tow car, with its self-levelling rear suspension.

My recent drive up to Pateley Bridge, Harrogate, 220 miles, 4 adults one child, and that worked out as 42mpg. That's about as good as it gets. I can get 50mpg, but that driving at around 60mpg, with very little braking.

My W211 E280 CDI Sport averages about 34mpg in mixed use but I tend to use my Fiat Panda for town and local driving. The Merc gets its best fuel efficiency when under cruise control on the motorway - I got 43mpg on a recent trip from Telford to London. It doesn't like you getting on and off the throttle...

44.5 mpg is not unusual on my C200 2.0Ltr petrol MB. That is until I filled it with E10 for the first and last time, I lost 6 to 7 mpg using it. Can't see the point of having a diesel engine for my sort of driving

Low 50s on a run in a 2010 E350 cdi 7G from new upto 98,000 miles. Mid to late 30s just knocking around.

My 2007 CLS 320 cdi 7G is the same. This is without trying but a generally smooth driving driving style and always using premium quality fuel.
