Hello guys, I have the above car its a 2003 model and has 145000 miles on it. The engine on idle is loud however when you drive over 2000 rpm it quietens down. I have got three injectors professionally cleaned up and replaced one also gave it a service but still no joy. Any ideas as to what it could be? Cheers

A diesel?

Seriously - it depends on what you call noisy. The 220cdi isn't excatly quiet - not by 2008 standards anyway. Neither is the 270 but they go quiet when cruising which is the important thing.
What do the mechanics say - do they think it's normal?

Early 4 cyl diesels were very noisy and the new ones only slighty less so. Has it got worse over time?

Have a look at the air filter mounts as they can cause rattle.

Ah yes - forgot about that one. My 270 suffered from the same thing when I got it. Quiet enough inside but from outside it sounded like a B52 on takeoff. Put my hand on the blurred filter housing and it went a lot quieter. Just a couple of rubber bungs by all accounts and spilled oil attacks them. I wedged a duster down the gap until it was fixed which kept it quiet.

I know they are noisy but mine just sounds like a tractor, everyone keeps saying to me "whats wrong with your car why is it so loud" mechanic thinks it could be lifters, but I have looked on here and someone has put wynns hydraulic tappet fluid in thier car and it has worked. Would you guys recommend this "quick fix"? i will have a look at the air filter box tonight, but the engine seems more tappety than others i have heard. Cheers

Hello, I have the same Tractor knocking sounds coming from my E220, CDI, 2006 engine. So I decided to drive back to Town for a Fix, At some point I lost Power, Car Overheated and It went OFF. Tried to Crank it, it starts Very High knocking sounds and then switches off after 5Seconds.

So I let it cool down and now its starting just Fine, Still no Error in the Dash but the Loud noise Persists.

Kindly help me figure out a Solution. I'm 250Kilometres from the city.

Get it serviced with the correct oil.

Personally I would be looking for diagnosis before spending anything.
I appreciated the distance to get that done but knocking, car overheated and lost power, cuts out after 5 seconds, 'could' be head gasket, big ends/ little ends, lost compression.

For me understanding the issue/s before spending anything would be the way. There are likely to be fault codes logged in the ECU, Torque (free for Android) and a £4 BT EML 327 sender 'just might' see those, or at least some, fault codes - that is if you want to start the diagnosis by the cheaper route.

Hello guys. So after we opened up the engine. We found out that the Crankshaft had been severely damaged due to Oil-pump Failure and I had to buy another engine. I wonder whether that diagnosis is RIGHT. Anyways. Anyone with the Timing Mark/Guideline for OM646, W211 E220?

Looks to be some serious heat marks on that crank (along with lots of missing teeth...)

You’ve started another thread so best to leave questions on the timing to that.
Condolences on your loss
