I have just purhased a 98 auto e200 with 147,000 miles lpg converted. It drives great. I got the equivilant of 50 mpg on my 220 mile drive back after collecting it. The auto box is smooth but when warm it clunks quite bad when I select drive or reverse. The brakes also tend to come on with a clunk although they do stop the car effectively with no pull to the side etc. I don't know if the problems are linked. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Basically it could be a little of many things in the drive chain.

So some play in the prop shaft disc joints, a little wear in the drive shaft splines.

An easy way to check is to just jack up on rear wheel and leave it in park, parking brake off, just by rocking the wheel you will see where the clonking is coming from,, is the center bearing on the prop going up and down. Anyway its easy to see what it is. Have a look and post back .
