My E220 has done 161k miles and had timing chain replaced at 120k miles
There is a dragging type of noise coming from the front of the engine when cold - the noise apprears to be near the front of the engine in the vicinity of auto timing unit. The noise disappers when you rev the engine up and becomes faint (at tick over) once engine reaches normal temperature
Can some one tell me if this is due to timing chain or something else ? Any clue on remedies would be welcome.

Thanks - Bert

Is that a duplex chain? I expect it is. I would doubt the chain is stretched as its done so few miles. Could be the tensionser needs replacing..?

Sorry I'm not familiar with the engine but if its basicly the same as the older 102 engine then its not hard, you just need the right tools.

Any one else have a view?

Does sound as if it could be the tensioner. Before you touch the tensioner i would advise you to remove the cam cover and lock the camshafts to prevent any movement when you release the tensioner,as i found to my cost that the exhaust cam was still under load and jumped a tooth although the engine was set at the recommended flywheel position. Good luck.

Before you do anything with the chain or tensioner turn your attention to the drive belt damper, they can rattle like hell. Its bolted right next to the cam timing adjuster you mentioned. Press on it with the engine running to see if the noise changes.
