Can anyone help me with a problem I have with my auto gearbox. The other day I was performing a 3 point turn in a bit too much of a hurry, and consequently lost all gears. There is no drive left in the car at all. When the engine is started and any gear selected, nothing happens, no noise or anything. My fear is that the gearbox has had it. If so does anyone know of the likely cost of replacement.

Any advice would be very helpful

This is hard to answer,I am not raising your hopes but it could be a simple linkage problem, when you put the car in drive,is there any change in the RPM of engine. What is the milage of car.

Thanks Malcolm,

When the car is put into drive there is no change in RPM, nothing whatsoever happens. The mileage is 185000.

It would seem that the pump has failed or valve block Your car is fault coded and aread out would show all.
You do not go to an MB garage as they will say £4000. I do not know where you are in the UK but there are very good gearbox centers around, they normally rebuild the box around £1000 with 12 months guarantee, but it could be something stupid though 185k is a fair milage but of coarse worth doing
Have the codes read out or have the selector lever check out, its a matter of someone moving the lever, while someone looks at the box.

Martin, you say nothing happens in ALL gears - does that include reverse? If so, it seems like a simple linkage problem. If it reverses but does nothing at all in any forward gear, then you probably have a sheered anchor pin on one of the brakebands which will mean a rebuild unfortunately as no specialist would repair just an anchor pin (though it can be done) and be prepared to offer any guarantee.
Hope it's just the former, as minimum rebuild cost (specialist NOT main dealer) is £1200 + £300-ish fitting and fluid + the usual VAT.

None of the gears work, but the park brake does work. Would this still indicate a linkage problem.

Problem solved, its the drive shaft which has snapped. Anybody know where to get a decent secondhand unit from?

I almost suggested that but they do brake with a clonk. I would check out the price of a new one, normally not so expensive. Are you going to fit it yourself ?

It probably is best to fit a new unit. I'm sending it to a local garage I know. They reckoned on £350 for the drive shaft and £85 to fit it. Didn't fancy trying to fit it myself, its too cold.
