My W210 year 2000 e240 recently had gearbox trouble. It was noisy, dropped into emergency mode and didn't change smoothly. A local specialist put new bearings in the box which almost cured it. I am left with an intermittent fault. The transmission will start to judder when driving at a steady speed. Sometimes the judder is preceeded by a drone similar to a noisy diff or wheel bearing. If I lift off the throttle for a moment the judder stops. I can drive for up to 20 miles before it returns.
The specialist suspects the torque convertor but can't guarantee a replacement will cure the fault.
The car has 44,000 miles on the clock and the service history suggests this might be accurate. I suspect the gearbox has run low on oil at some time.
Any ideas please?

Your Mercedes
S class
Also check your gearbox oil for radiator coolant contamination, the auto box oil cooler pipes run thru the rad and they can leak causing the gearbox fluid to be contaminated and this can cause the torque convertor to drone..
