My W210 year 2000 e240 recently had gearbox trouble. It was noisy, dropped into emergency mode and didn't change smoothly. A local specialist put new bearings in the box which almost cured it. I am left with an intermittent fault. The transmission will start to judder when driving at a steady speed. Sometimes the judder is preceeded by a drone similar to a noisy diff or wheel bearing. If I lift off the throttle for a moment the judder stops. I can drive for up to 20 miles before it returns.
The specialist suspects the torque convertor but can't guarantee a replacement will cure the fault.
The car has 44,000 miles on the clock and the service history suggests this might be accurate. I suspect the gearbox has run low on oil at some time.
Any ideas please?
