E240 iffy gearbox

Hi all ,Can anybody tell me how the gearchange works on my 1999 E240 estate , most of the time the box is fine then every so often it seems to stick at 3rd ,sometimes a quick flick into N and back and it drops in fine .

My Question = do the electrics change the gears or does the speed of gearbox control the electrics ? .
Is there a cure ?.
Can the ghange speeds be altered by diagnostics ?.

The car has been on indie diagnostics and all error codes cleared.

Check the fliud level, sometimes an oil change and filter can make a big difference to any auto box.

thanks for that, already done it the problem occurs randomly so it's difficult to get a line on it Paul
