Car has never burnt oil in it's life. Was driving along motorway this week when the "check oil level" showed up. Car became sluggish with exceleration. Pulled off at exit drove down slip road. Car driving normally. Had to stop at end of slip road. Pulled away & noticed a great plume of smoke out of exhaust. Checked oil . No oil left in engine. Refilled oil. now burns oil like no tomorrow & smokes lots. Engine still ticks over smoothly & sounds fine.?????

Sounds bad, dont you check oil every week ? Fairly terminal on the rings etc i would have thought. Does it make a clattering noise when starting from cold?

The oil level has always been ok checked regularly. It has never smoked from the exhaust before. It burnt all the oil in the engine within 5 miles on the motorway. The car has only done 50,000 miles even though it's year 2000. Engine makes no noises whatsoever. Was wondering if there is some sort of way the engine is syphoning the oil & pushing it back down the inlet manifold.

Wonder if turbo bearings have gone and allowed the oil to pump straight into the exhaust, im not sure TBH.

Is the car driving ok now, is the performance there as you would expect?

Just had a similar problem with the same car, smoke and lack of performance, diags didnt show any faults with air flow meter but I suspected it might be at fault, replaced the air meter and car drove much better.
Also did an engine flush followed by an Italian service!! then new oil filter and mobil 1.

There are references on WIS about the V6, piston ring wear, stem seals, and oilways clogging inside the engine, one oilway has a burr that needs removing a fault from production.
If you remove the oil filler cap and look inside, if all you see is crusty oil then my guess is thats your problem, clogged oilways.

And only use the MB oil filter and nothing else!!!
