Hello
back on here after giving mb another try!
the car in question is a 99 e240 estate and it seems to me to be revving quite high, wondered if there are any figures available to compare engine speed & revs, this one is reving at something like 3500 rmp at about 70mph? it does feel like there should be another gear, at what speed should 5th gear appear?
It seems to be going into 4th but it hasnt been above 85mph yet.
mpg is about 27 which is what I expected

That sounds to high, my 200CDI is only doing 2500 at 80mph,

Welcome "back" to the forums??

Does it not tell you in the handbook? assuming you have one that is, if not let me know and I will check mine. I have the E240 petrol (1998) and I seem to recall it does around 2500 at 60mph.

my e300td when driven gently will go into 5th as low as 45mph. i appreciate a diesel will probably be higher geared than the petrol variant the op has, but for reference my car is at roughly 2400rpm at 70mph

checked again today and as feared it only changes into top gear occassionally, when it does it revs at 2500 at 65 which seems about right, otherwise it 3000rpm. this could be a short ownership!

on tipshift, the gate is PRND and you have a left and right +-
On the previous gbox it was PRND432 I think.

Stupid question but were the late pre tipshift gearboxes 5 speed?

Hi dieselonly, sorry I didn't get back yesterday however the Technical Data Manual supplied with the car does not give rpm per gear but it does give the following info:

Maximum speeds in each gear in km/h

1st gear - 53 km/h
2nd gear - 87 km/h
3rd gear - 141 km/h
4th gear - 211 km/h
5th gear - 222 km/h

Convert km to miles multiply the above by 0.621

This one is now solved, I had apparently been knocking the lever right when moving the lever quickly into drive which I now see leaves it in 4th, just about used to it now, it does go into 5th and also revs a bit lower! I feel slightly foolish but at least its cost me nothing! I will live with the hard 1st & 2nd changes for now, seems to be a common annoyance. thanks again for the advice
