A '51 E240 2.6 V6 Avantgarde tip with 90+K miles on eBay quoted as doing average 35 m.p.g. - can any owners bear this out? I would be surprised to see much more than around 27 m.p.g. average on this model

define average!
Motorway can be as high as 37, town as low as 13.
My computer average is around 31 with a daily commute of 6 miles town, 30 miles motorway then another 12 miles town.
I did reset the computer on the motorway once when I was cruising at 80 and it reported mid 40's!
I guess if all I did was drive the M1 at 3am with the cruise on at 75, I could get that up to 36 ish, but 35 is definately on the optomomistic side. I only managed to get that average out of a 320CDI.

isnt that a eye doctor?

you can get 35mpg out of a 5.5litre V8 if you drive correctly. But as stated. depends how you drive.
A 1.8 SLK average 36mpg for me mainly round town. so it could be close to that. it depends how it was driving and where and by who.

M-B give an 'average' of 27 for the 2.6, simply consisting of the urban cycle and the highway figures added together and divided by 2.

I was trying to work out which model has the potential to give the best returns, 2.6/3.2 V6 or 4.3 V8. It seems each can achieve more or less the same - which speaks better for the 2.6 and the 4.3 than for the 3.2 I figure.

yes a hopeful one!

They can achieve around the same, though if you thrash the v8 I suspect it has the ability to fall lower than the rest. It all depends on your self control and what you consider acceptable performance. To some, the 2.6 is underpowered so they would drive it harder and get a lower mpg than if they had a 320 and drove more gently. I find, if you let it build up, it may take another whole second or two longer to get to the desired speed but these days you're generally in traffic behind something that makes the 2.6 look like a sports car and you're all doing 65, so what's the point.
If you push them all equally as hard, the 2.6 will be the most economical, but the slowest.
Horses for courses.
