Hi there, nice friendly forum you have here lads.

Well my problem is that i have recently been able to detect a slight whine that sounds like it is coming from the drivetrain somewhere in the rear (axle/rear diff/driveshafts?) and was looking for some advice on how best to, firstly correctly identify and secondly how to remedy it.

Also i recently ran rather low on fuel in between M25 jct.s and she hasnt been idling as sweet as when i first bought her (Oct 07')

She has covered 150k now so i know i can expect to be thinking about the heavier mechanics involved in the drivetrain too.

Please break it to me gently......LOL :)

Sorry....i can hear the noise at lower speeds also, but harder to spot.

When the car whines when pulling and is OK on the over run it is the pinion bearing in the diff that has failed

It would be cheaper to get a good secondhand diff as they are expensive things to get rebuilt

Welcome to the forum :D

It will not be the other way round as that cant be so,, most noticable at 30-40 MPH and light throtle.

There are firms that re build them, you could check the oil level in the diff

Price wise I do not know

i have e240 v6 ,i had to change my diff a couple of months ago and i put the photos of it up here ,search my posts and you should find it,you will not find a cheap diff to replace yours ,the ratio on mine is 3.67 to 1 ,a rare ratio,i found a used one on german ebay at 200 euros +pp,do not change to any other ratio it will not work,it puts your gearbox into limp mode because it gets confused, there is another one in germany for sale i know, you would have to place an ad on ebay germany for it,it did not sell about 6 weeks ago ,dronsfields have one but its dear and plus plus, thats if its your diff, but as you will probably find out it is just one of many things it could be,regards alan
