E250 CGI transmission/engine noise - gear 3-->4

Afternoon,

I am new to the forum. I own an E250 CGI 2010, 55k miles, automatic transmission. Wandered if one of you might have an idea what the following could be?

When accelerating slowly from 3rd to 4th gear (in automatic), at times the engine makes a higher pitched roaring noise and probably loses some power, whilst the revs remain fairly constant (if not a bit unstable) at about 2500. This doesn't always happen, but mostly when the engine is warm. It does ultimately shift to 4th gear by itself.

When accelerating faster the problem does not happen at all. The car's been annually serviced at official Mercedes dealership.

What could this be? Engine or gearbox? Transmission warn? Fluids? Any idea?

Welcome to the forum.

Are there any warning lights on the dashboard?

I would be suspicious that it is gearbox related.

Do you know if the gearbox has ever been serviced?
It should be listed your electronic service record.

I think you will have the 7G gearbox -- as the name suggests it has 7 forward gears and the previous MB gearbox only had 5 gears.
The 7 speed gearbox code is 722.9 and it should be on your datasheet. The 5 speed is 722.6.

I'm not sure when the E Class switched over but I do know some of the early W212 model E220 CDIs still had the 5 speed gearbox.
I'm not sure about the petrol models.

Anyway, both gearboxes should be serviced every 40,000 miles or 5 years, whichever comes soonest.
If it hasn't been done within that mileage/timeframe that is where I would start.

I have W204 Coupé (also 250 models in petrol) mine does this but only when it's cold. I have to do one of the following:

1. Rev harder so the car will change gear to forth.
2. Put the car in manual mode and change the gear

I've had my gearbox oil changed two years ago at an MB dealer.

Thank you. No, no warning lights. The car had a service (believe B) at a Merc dealer last summer, as well as one the year before (not sure which type). Not specifically aware it has had a gearbox service. It is the version with a 5-gear gearbox. Shall give the garage a call to see if the gearbox has ever been serviced, good point. Hi Larry,

You should be able to look up the online service record for your car.
That should have some mention of 'Gearbox' or 'Transmission' Service (or similar) and a tick box to say it was done.

If it hasn't been done, I would urge you to get it done ASAP.
There are many good independent MB garages who will do an excellent job at a much lower cost compared to the main dealers -- or stick with the main dealer if you prefer.

Actually, with a 2010 car it should be on the second service now -- even though your mileage is low.

Your car shouldn't behave in the manner you mention above.
The service might not solve the problem but a good pro who is used to doing the job and the behaviour of the gearbox will be able to advise.

If it is the 5g , has the gearbox tube in the engine bay got a red tab in it (they were black from the factory) . Also you could buy an eBay dipstick and check the oil level if it has a red tab (£10 ?)
If it’s all black then you may not have had it serviced in which case as above , get it done at an MB Indy

Thanks Steve. Just called the service department, there's no online record. Will have to dorp in next Wednesday when they re-open and find out. I would not be surprised it hasn't had a recent gearbox service. Since 2017 - the year I bought it - there's been no mention about it by the official MB dealership in question.

If you happen to have a recommendation for a good MB specialist in the vicinity of Oxford..? Cheers

Great, thanks. It does have a red tab on it, just checked. So the gearbox may have been serviced five years ago I reckon. Will get the service booklet and take it to an MB specialist. Any recommendations in Oxford area?

Give Ian , @star Mercedes Independent in Reading is the only one I know of . The Red tab is a good indication it has been done , but can just mean the level was checked by someone , rather than oil and filter change .
