I am very new to the whole MB world having recently purchased a 2003 E270CDI with 73000 miles.

When travelling at low speeds usually between 1000rpm & 2500rpm the engine revs fluctuate about 100 - 200 rpm and gear change can be slightly slow and erratic. it does not happen all of the time but seems to be slightly worse when the engine is hot.

Someone mentioned that it may be the vacum on the gearbox but, i have also been told that the modern MB auto gearboxes do not have vacum pumps.

As i say i'm qutie new to all of this so i hope this makes sense and someone can come up with a suggestion.

Thanks in advance.

Are you saying the gearbox is slipping?
Have the oil and filters been changed?
This should be done every 40k.
There is also a fault where the seal on the electrical plug goes and results in the gearbox ecu filling with oil.

Get yourself a decent merc specialist and have it properly gone through. Mercs are complex and non specialists can make a real hash of it so avoid them with such issues.

Does it make a droning noise at 1500-200 revs?

The car has now been Glycol tested and results came back positive but at the lowest end. I have bbenm advised by Merc Aid (Basildon) that If they do a full flush of Gearbox/Tourque converter, change the rad this will solve the problem. Does this sound right?

The car does drone at low revs which i'm told this is one of the symptons of above.

I bought the car from a local dealer just 4 weeks ago and i'm concerned that if i have the above work done and contact them to pay for it the problem will come back further down the line and i will be stuck with the bill for Gearbox/Torque Converter.

does anyone have any advice on my legal posistion?

I think that you should get the gearbox fluid checked for any Glycol content

additonal info: Merc Aid also told me that it looks like fluid has been changed very recently (within last few thousand miles) I have done about 2000 miles since purchase. This suggests to me that someone was aware of this before selling.

You bought it from a local dealer 4 weeks ago. I'd take it back and demand either a full refund or that they replace the torque converter and rad. Once the torque converter is contaminated, thats it. New fluid won't clear the contamination. You're stuck with the drone/vibration. With the work you've described it won't get any worse, but it won't get any better either. Its a dud, so take it back.

Even when the glycol figure is at the bottom end, the lock up clutch has to be reset on STAR, if there is no change then a new torque converter is required, seldom the complete box.

I would have thought that a new rad could be clearly seen on a car that has this problem, if the rad was not changed then the problem will still be there
