What is the major mpg difference between theses 2 diesel engines? Does the 270 give considerably more mpg.
Also anyone who knows please confirm typical mpg for motorway driving, combined and around town.
I imagine servicing costs are about the same
Thanks.

It depends a little upon which 320cdi you are thinking about. The IL6 320CDI averaged 36.5mpg of very mixed driving, the V6 320CDI is averaging 37.5mpg over similar journeys. These fuel economies are based on fill ups and not the trip computer.
Whilst I believe the 270 will give slightly better fuel economy the 320's are wonderfully smooth but even better than that is the power

The 270 gives 50+mpg on motorways, 45-50mpg on A/B roads and ~35-40mpg around town (in my experience) of course all depends on your right foot :)
The IL5 270CDI isn't the most refined diesel but does have a satifying throb and sounds good under acceleration (in my Sport pack)

On my commute I got 36 from an il6 320cdi loan car, and 41 from my 270cdi. I was trying to improve on 33 from my E240 so another 3mpg just didn't justify it. That, plus the fact that the insurance was another £100 per year for the 320 over the 270, pushed me to the 270.

I've never seen 50mpg (aside from resetting the computer, on cruise control on a flat road at 60mph!), but driving like I was scared of the throttle, I did achieve 48 on a 150 mile run ....once. Mid 40s are achieveable but not if any stop/start is involved.

The 320 is the nicer engine. Both are quiet and smooth on a run but the 270 can be a bit more agricultural when pushed. Whilst the 270 can certainly keep up, the 320 is in a different performance league. But yyou do pay for it.
Another consideration, is that the 320 comes with parameter steering. Parking, I find the 270 sometimes gets very heavy when twirling teh wheel. The 320 feels nicer to drive as a result.

Hi
I have an E320 estate with the 320CDI straight 6 engine. I get 35.9mpg average mainly rush hour driving my daily commute is 10 miles A roads, 10 miles motorway and 10 miles City.

On a motorway trip >100 miles @ 70 - 75 mph I get 42 - 44mpg, @75 - 80 mph I get 38 - 40mpg, @80 - 90mph I get 36 - 38mpg (I measure on fill ups not on the trip computer)

I cannot compare with a 270, however, I got an average of 40.2mpg on my VW Passat estate with the 2.5v6 TDI engine over 40k miles

I wonder if my SL will ever show that reading :roll:
You could always print it out and stick it in front of your trip computer

Although the question was about an E Class.

I wonder if MB Estates have a lower final drive ratio than saloons - estates generally used to.
