1995 E280 estate, cruise control doesn't function at all

Local MB Tech suggested the late HFM cars don't have a cruise amplifier under the dash on the driver's side but that it's all done by the engine management. Suggested I check the brake light switch & that there was a connection to the Hall Effect sensor on the speedo binnacle

Brake light switch replaced: no change. Hall Effect sensor checked: there's a co-axial (ish) socket next to the speedo cable connector with nothing plugged into it. No loose trailing cables behind the dash so I don't really know what's going on

Tyres are new. Fuses all cleaned & checked. No cruise control amp on offside under dash. Car is standard apart from aftermarket alarm under dash driver's side

Suggestions? Is there a cruise amp and, if so, where is it?

Thanks
